Abure Faction of Labour Party Cautions NDC Leader Seriake Dickson Over Alliance with Peter Obi

The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has issued a strong warning to Senator Seriake Dickson and the leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), urging them to be cautious in their political alliance with former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and his supporters.

In a statement signed by Barrister Julius Abure, National Chairman of the Labour Party (Abure faction), the party alleged that Obi and his followers have a history of attempting to “conquer and usurp” the leadership of any political party that accommodates them, citing the Labour Party’s own recent experiences as a cautionary tale.

Abure advised Senator Dickson, who reportedly resisted pressure from Obi to allocate all elective positions to his supporters, to learn from the Labour Party’s trajectory. He described Dickson’s stance as “commendable” and a necessary measure to prevent the dominance of Obi’s “vociferous supporters.”

The statement read in part: “They say history usually repeats itself. Senator Dickson and Co have seen their trajectory and learnt from what happened to us... Having learnt from that, that is probably why the NDC leadership are collecting what they ought to collect upfront so that they can have the resources to manage the party.”

Abure accused Obi, Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, and their supporters of ingratitude after benefiting from the Labour Party’s “free ticket policy” during the 2022/2023 general elections. According to him, instead of supporting the party’s leadership after winning elections, they turned against it and sought to take control of its structures from ward to national levels.

“We did it in 2022/23. Immediately they saw that Obi was interested in the leadership of the party, all those elected under the platform of the party simply followed Obi, forgetting all the sacrifices and suffering we made for them,” Abure stated.

He further claimed that many elected officials under the Labour Party banner have made no meaningful contributions to the party since assuming office in the National Assembly. Abure suggested that leaders of the NDC are wisely avoiding repeating the Labour Party’s mistakes by not handing over all positions and interests to Obi’s camp.

The Abure faction attributed its intervention to public curiosity about how the party managed the 2022/2023 elections amid what it described as the “domineering activities” of Peter Obi and his supporters. Abure insisted that the party made significant sacrifices for Obi’s interests, granting most of his supporters free tickets in the hope of building the party, only to face betrayal afterward.

The statement concluded by emphasizing the need for balance in political alliances, warning that no political leader who observed Obi’s actions in the Labour Party would repeat the same error.

This position reflects the ongoing internal crisis within the Labour Party, with the Abure faction maintaining its claim as the authentic leadership of the party.
