 LASG HOSTS Y2024 WOMEN'S ASSEMBLY TO EMPOWER, CELEBRATE WOMEN Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to advancing and empowering women, describing them as the pillars of communities, contributing in numerous ways as mothers, entrepreneurs, educators and leaders.  Governor Sanwo-Olu stated this in his keynote address at the 2024 Women's Assembly for Local Government and Local Council Development Areas organised by the Ministry of Women's Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) at the De Blue Roof, LTV 8 complex, Agindigbi Ikeja.  The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Governor, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, described the Assembly as a critical platform for celebrating women’s contributions and tackling challenges affecting their well-being.  Kogi CJ Grants Release to 27 Inmates with the Help of NGO


The Chief Judge of Kogi State, Justice Josiah Majebi, has facilitated the release of 27 inmates from six correctional facilities in the state. These individuals had been detained due to their inability to pay fines and compensation.


The releases were made possible through the efforts of the Victory Idewele Foundation, which paid the outstanding fines and compensation. Justice Majebi visited the correctional centres from Monday to Wednesday to oversee the process.


At Koton-Karfe Maximum Security Correctional Centre, two inmates were granted freedom. Mustapha Idris, who owed N50,000, was released, while Kehinde Amaka, who was sentenced to one year with a N300,000 fine, will remain in custody until January 15, 2025, to serve the rest of his sentence.


Additionally, 20 inmates were released from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kabba, and 5 from Ankpa. Justice Majebi emphasized the importance of ensuring no inmate is unjustly detained and urged magistrates to avoid being used as instruments of oppression. He also criticized unnecessary delays in legal cases by some prosecutors, which cause lengthy detentions for awaiting trial inmates.


He commended the Victory Idewele Foundation for its contribution, noting that this initiative was a first in the state’s history. The foundation paid a total of ten million naira to settle the fines, while also providing transport fare for the released inmates. The foundation has pledged to further support the inmates with skill acquisition training in Abuja, including accommodation, meals, and starter packs upon completion.


Justice Majebi also acknowledged the efforts of the chairman of Idah Local Government, who has shown concern for the local custodial centre, and urged other local government leaders to follow suit.


Innocent Idewele, founder of the Victory Idewele Foundation, explained that the NGO aims to improve the lives of underprivileged individuals and emphasized that societal needs should not be left solely to the government to address.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
