 Zamfara Governor’s Wife Facilitates Marriage for 100 Orphans, Offers Support to Grooms The wife of the Zamfara State Governor, Huriyya Dauda Lawal, has overseen the marriage of 100 orphaned girls in the state. The brides, who were well cared for prior to the ceremony, received full attention for their beautification. Each bride’s dowry, amounting to 151,000 Naira, was covered by the Governor’s wife. In addition, Huriyya Dauda Lawal provided essential household items, including furniture such as cushions, beds, wardrobes, mattresses, and kitchen utensils. Furthermore, she offered financial assistance of N50,000 to each groom to help them start their businesses and achieve self-sufficiency. Hajiya Lawal encouraged the brides to respect their husbands and practice patience. She also assured them that the Zakkat and Endowment Board would be available to offer support should any marital issues arise.

 Virginia man passes away after a bear that had been shot, falls from a tree and crushes him. 58-year-old Lester Harvey Jr. passed away on the morning of December 9th due to freak hunting accident. Lester and a group of hunters had chased a bear up a tree. While it was in the tree someone in the hunting party shot the bear. After being struck by the round, the bear fell from the tree and struck Lester. Fellow hunters attempted to render first aid until EMS arrived. Lester was rushed to an area hospital but sadly passed away Friday, December 13th. Officials are not seeking charges in connection with the incident.

 Edo Assembly Suspends Local Council Chairpersons Over Alleged Misconduct The Edo State House of Assembly has suspended the chairpersons and vice chairpersons of all 18 local governments for two months due to alleged insubordination and gross misconduct. The decision, made during a plenary session on Tuesday, followed a petition from Governor Monday Okpebholo.  The suspension stems from the council leaders’ failure to submit their financial records as instructed by the governor. On December 3, Governor Okpebholo had given the chairpersons 48 hours to provide their financial statements from September 2023 onward to the Edo State Assets Verification Committee. He described their non-compliance as insubordination and gross misconduct, prompting his request for the House to take action.  UK Increases Financial Requirements for Student, Tourist, and Work Visas in 2025 The UK government has raised the financial requirements for student, tourist, and work visa applicants starting in 2025. For students, the required proof of funds has increased to £12,600 (approximately 26.3 million Naira) for living expenses in London, or £9,900 (about 20.6 million Naira) for those living outside London. This is in addition to showing evidence of paying the first year’s tuition fees. Visa fees have also been revised, with the standard student visa now costing £510, while a tourist visa will cost £120. Philips was previously standing trial before Justice S.O. Solebo of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, following her arraignment on January 27, 2022. However, the trial could not be concluded before the retirement of Justice Solebo in November 2022, a development that resulted in the re-assigning of the case file to Justice Ijelu. She was on May 22, 2023 re-arraigned before Justice Ijelu alongside her company, Omritas Energy Limited, on a five-count charge bordering on stealing and issuance of dud cheques to the tune of N57,690,000. This increase follows adjustments due to factors such as the rising exchange rate, inflation reaching 33.9%, and changes in available generation capacity. The December 2024 Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO), posted on NERC's website, retains electricity tariffs for all customer categories.  World Bank Approves $1.65bn in Loans for Nigeria in 2025 The World Bank plans to approve three major loan projects for Nigeria in 2025, totaling $1.65 billion. These loans will focus on addressing critical issues such as internally displaced persons, education, and nutrition.  The projects include the $300 million Solutions for the Internally Displaced and Host Communities Project, the $553.8 million HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All project, and the $800 million Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria 2.0. These loans are part of the World Bank’s ongoing support for Nigeria’s development and economic recovery, and the loans are expected to be approved in early 2025. The World Bank has approved $6.95 billion in loans for Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu's administration over the past 18 months.

 Family of Missing Ebonyi Student Appeals to Governors for Intervention The family of David Ogbonnaya, a missing student from Kingdom College, Ozu Abam, Abia State, has appealed to Governors Alex Otti and Francis Nwifuru for assistance in locating their son, who was abducted on March 5, 2024, during a land dispute.  David, from Amagu Ishiagu, Ebonyi State, was one of eight students abducted by youths from the Ndi Okorie community, with seven others eventually rescued by the Nigerian Army. Despite efforts from local authorities and security agencies, David remains missing. The family is seeking help from state governors and security forces to find him, whether alive or dead.

 Father and Stepmother Sentenced to Life for Murder of 10-Year-Old Sara Sharif A UK court has sentenced Urfan Sharif, 43, and Beinash Batool, 30, to life imprisonment for the murder of their 10-year-old daughter, Sara Sharif. The child was subjected to months of severe abuse, including burns, broken bones, and being beaten with a metal pole and cricket bat. Sara was found dead in August 2023, covered in 71 injuries.  The court heard that Sharif and Batool showed no remorse for their actions. Additionally, Sara’s uncle, Faisal Malik, was sentenced to 16 years for causing or allowing her death. The case highlighted failures by social services, as Sara had been withdrawn from school months before her death.

 FG Allocates N30bn for Universities of Agriculture to Begin Mechanized Farming The federal government has approved N30 billion for the country’s 30 universities of agriculture to kickstart mechanized farming. This decision comes with instructions for these specialized institutions to focus solely on their core mandates and discontinue offering programs unrelated to their original objectives. Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, made the announcement on Tuesday in Abuja during a retreat organized for pro-chancellors of federal universities. He emphasized the significance of universities of agriculture adopting mechanized farming practices and revealed that each institution would receive N1 billion as an initial grant to launch the initiative.

 Reps to invite CDS, COAS over alleged unlawful operation of 177 battalion in Nasarawa The House of Representatives has resolved to invite the Chief of Defense Staff, the Chief of Army staff and the commanding officer of the 177 battalion over an alleged unlawful arrest and detention of a community leader in Nasarawa state. Honourable Mansur Soro who moved the motion during Tuesday’s plenary, explained that on December 9th 2024, the community leader Bello Badejo was arrested in Maliya town, Nassarawa State by officers of the 177 battalion of the Nigerian Army with no prior invitation or court injunction. He further stated that one week after, Badejo is yet to be arraigned, which signifies an unlawful act by the Nigerian Army and a violation of the fundamental human rights as provided in sections 34, 35 and 36 of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended. The service chiefs are to appear before the House Committees on Army, Human Rights and Justice on Thursday 20th December 2024.

 A police officer in Rustenburg, South Africa, has been condemned by the South African Police Service (SAPS) for allegedly assaulting a man at the local police station. The incident, which was captured on video, occurred after a disagreement at a barber shop. The officer, identified as Ofentse Raphuti, allegedly chased and assaulted the victim in the police station parking lot. On-duty officers intervened, and both the victim and the officer have filed assault charges against each other. The SAPS has denounced the officer's actions as "totally unacceptable" and is investigating the incident. Watch video below.

This decision came during his concert in Chandigarh on December 14, where he expressed dissatisfaction with the current facilities. Speaking in Punjabi, Diljit said, “Here, we don’t have infrastructure for live shows. This is a source of big revenue and employment for many people. I’ll try next time to have a stage at the center so the audience can be around it.  NSYC Corp Member Collapses and Dies in Kebbi A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Tayachibiyacha Ebal (Female), with the code KB/24C/918, serving in Dakingari, Kebbi State, has tragically passed away after collapsing. Upon collapsing, she was rushed to the camp clinic at Dakingari and later transferred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Birnin-Kebbi, where she unfortunately succumbed despite receiving medical attention. In a statement, Comrade Nurudeen Bala Fingiller, spokesman for the Kebbi State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, confirmed that the deceased's body had been sent to her family in Adamawa State. Fingiller also expressed condolences on behalf of the NYSC and the Kebbi State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, thanking the Governor of Kebbi State for his financial and logistical support in facilitating the burial arrangements.

 Cyclone Chido: Trail of destruction as 34 killed in Mozambique At least 34 people have been killed by Cyclone Chido in Mozambique since it made landfall there on Sunday, the UN humanitarian agency OCHA said on Tuesday, citing figures from the southern African country's disaster agency, Reuters reported. The small French island of Mayotte bore the brunt of the storm, and hundreds or even thousands are believed to have been killed there before it moved on to hit Mozambique on the eastern coast of southern Africa. "As of 17 December 2024, a total of 174,158 people were estimated to be impacted, with 34 people dead and 319 injured," OCHA said in a statement, citing Mozambique's institute for natural disasters.
