 Apple's statement on minerals must be 'verified': DRC International lawyers for the Democratic Republic of Congo welcomed Apple's decision to stop sourcing minerals from there due to worsening conflict, but said they would press ahead with their cases against the company in Europe. Criminal complaints were filed against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium this week on behalf of DR Congo, accusing the tech firm of using conflict minerals in its supply chain, Reuters reported. DR Congo is a major source of tin, tantalum and tungsten, so-called 3T minerals used in computers and mobile phones. But some artisanal mines are run by armed groups involved in massacres, rapes and other crimes, say UN experts and rights groups. 'Satisfaction and caution' Apple said on Tuesday that it strongly disputes the claims and has told suppliers they must not use the minerals in question sourced from DR Congo or Rwanda.  Heavy downpour collapses bridge in Plateau community A major bridge in the Shendam local government area of Plateau linking the Total area and other parts of the Shendam town has collapsed as a result of a heavy downpour on Sunday afternoon. The said bridge is also a major route leading to Tunkus in the neighbouring Mikang local government area of the State and its collapse has put a strain on smooth transportation for residents who may have to take longer alternative routes to get to their destinations. A resident of Shendam town, Benedicta Naanpoe said no life was lost but citizens are worried about when the bridge would be reconstructed for ease of movement because using alternative routes would put more financial burden on citizens considering the already hike in the transport fares as the result of the petrol subsidy removal. Why we set ablaze vessel laden with stolen diesel – Navy The Nigerian Navy has said that it set ablaze the Merchant Vessel CECELIA in accordance with extant procedure regarding seized vessels with stolen oil. The move was also informed due to serious navigational hazards, huge financial cost, and serious national security problems caused by abandoned ships, Navy’s spokesperson, Ayo-Vaughan, said in a statement yesterday. The vessel was arrested by the Naval component of Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) on 15 August 2023 with 250,000 liters of product suspected to be illegally refined Automated Gas Oil (AGO), popularly called diesel, at Meco Jetty in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.  Transportation Minister visits Abuja train station, says NRC MD may face disciplinary action The Minister of Transportation, Saidu Alkali, said that the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation might face disciplinary action. AIkali disclosed this on Sunday when he paid an unscheduled visit to the Idu Train station in Abuja. During the visit, the minister who personally inspected the coaches discovered several issues that needed urgent attention. He said, “I received a complaint from the security escorts that in the last five months their allowances were not paid and I am happy that the MD of NRC is appearing before the ministry on Tuesday to brief. So, if he comes I am now well informed the lifts and escalators aren’t working, which makes it very difficult for the elderly and the disabled persons to use the train for travelling. “Therefore, he would explain why disciplinary action wouldn’t be taken against him." Emetu made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja. Bandits flee forests, release victims in Niger Following military onslaught in forests in Niger State, many bandits have started fleeing the forests and releasing some abductees. This came on the heels of the disclaimer by the Niger State police command that no notorious bandit had declared himself governor in the state. LEADERSHIP Sunday gathered that some of the farmers abducted about five months ago around Kaffin Korro, Munya and some parts of Shiroro are being released. It was learnt that the bandits who are anticipating the onslaught following the recent crash of a military helicopter linked to the Gide Dogo bandits group are retreating to neighbouring states. A source from the communities around Shiroro axis where the bandits had held sway in the past three weeks said they were no longer coming out bracingly to operate as they did in previous weeks.
