 Apple's statement on minerals must be 'verified': DRC International lawyers for the Democratic Republic of Congo welcomed Apple's decision to stop sourcing minerals from there due to worsening conflict, but said they would press ahead with their cases against the company in Europe. Criminal complaints were filed against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium this week on behalf of DR Congo, accusing the tech firm of using conflict minerals in its supply chain, Reuters reported. DR Congo is a major source of tin, tantalum and tungsten, so-called 3T minerals used in computers and mobile phones. But some artisanal mines are run by armed groups involved in massacres, rapes and other crimes, say UN experts and rights groups. 'Satisfaction and caution' Apple said on Tuesday that it strongly disputes the claims and has told suppliers they must not use the minerals in question sourced from DR Congo or Rwanda.  Potential long-term health risks of tattoos -- Possible association between tattoos and lymphoma revealed. A new study by researchers at Lund University has shown that an association exists between tattoos and lymphoma, making the former a risk factor for the lymphatic cancer. Their findings were published in the journal, eClinicalMedicine. Using population registries, the investigators analyzed results from 11,905 people in total, of whom 2,938 subjects had been diagnosed with lymphoma, when aged between 20 and 60 years old. These people were then matched with a control group of the same sex and age, but without that malignant diagnosis. Subjects with and without tattoos were identified by questionnaires. From that lymphoma group, 289 (%) had been tattooed, while 18% (735) of the control group, without lymphoma, had tattoos.  EFCC Arrests Two for Currency Racketeering in Enugu   Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC have arrested the duo of Nweke Daniel Kelechi and Iroude Chibuzor in connection with alleged currency racketeering of N850, 000. 00 (Eight Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira).   They were arrested by members of the Special Task Force of the Commission attached to the Enugu Zonal Command of the EFCC on Sunday, May 26, 2024 during a sting operation around United Bank for Africa (UBA), ESBS, Enugu State, following days of surveillance and actionable intelligence.   During the sting operation, Chibuzor was initially arrested. Upon investigation, it was discovered that he was working for Kelechi, who authorised him to sell new Naira notes.   The suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

  Egyptian service members and Israeli Defense Forces exchanged gunfire Monday at the Rafah border crossing along the Gaza Strip, the Times of Israel is reporting.  EFCC Arraigns Two for Possession of Solid Minerals without Licence The Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 arraigned two persons for offences bordering on possession of solid minerals without lawful authority. They are Nura Lawal and Tunde Jimoh.  The defendants were arraigned on one-count charge before Justice Uche Agomoh of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, Oyo State. While Lawal was the driver of a truck allegedly conveying about 30 tons of assorted solid minerals, Jimoh was the escort of the truck. Their journey to the dock started when the Ilorin Command of the EFCC received intelligence about the activities of some people who were engaged in mining of solid minerals within Kwara and transporting same outside for commercial purposes without lawful authority.  Ace Nollywood filmmaker Reginald Ebere is dead Renowned Nollywood director and screenwriter Reginald Ebere is dead. The award-winning filmmaker died on Sunday. The National Secretary of the Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Perekeme Odon, confirmed his death. The industry is deeply mourning this loss. “We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of our dear brother and colleague, Mr Reginald Ebere,” Mr Odon said in his announcement. The publicity-shy filmmaker, famous for writing the screenplay for the 1999 Nollywood blockbuster Issakaba, was bedridden and off the radar for six years due to health challenges.  Actor Johnny Wactor shot dead in Los Angeles A long-time veteran of the TV soap, General Hospital, Johnny Wactor, has been shot dead in Los Angeles. Wactor was killed on Saturday in a robbery that turned horribly wrong. He died at age 37. The actor reportedly mistook masked thieves stealing his car for tow truck drivers and intervened before they opened fire, Dailymail reports. Wactor was said to be leaving his side job at a rooftop bar with a female colleague at around 3:25 am Saturday in the area of West Pico Boulevard and South Hope Street, when he saw the three men, believing he was being towed. The Los Angeles police department said that one of the three men, all of whom were wearing masks, shot Wactor before fleeing in a separate vehicle. Paramedics got to the scene shortly after and took him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The masked suspects remain at large and have yet to be identified or described.

Asue Ighodalo was declared the winner of the party’s governorship primary election, which took place in Benin City. In his judgment, Justice James Omotosho on Monday stated that Shaibu did not have the legal standing to challenge the outcome of the primary because he did not fully participate in it and was not present at the venue on the day it took place. Omotosho further ruled that Shaibu’s lawsuit was premature as he failed to exhaust the internal dispute resolution mechanism within the PDP before resorting to court.
