APPLE'S STATEMENT ON MINERALS MUST BE 'VERIFIED'-DRC. (PHOTO).

 Apple's statement on minerals must be 'verified': DRC International lawyers for the Democratic Republic of Congo welcomed Apple's decision to stop sourcing minerals from there due to worsening conflict, but said they would press ahead with their cases against the company in Europe. Criminal complaints were filed against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium this week on behalf of DR Congo, accusing the tech firm of using conflict minerals in its supply chain, Reuters reported. DR Congo is a major source of tin, tantalum and tungsten, so-called 3T minerals used in computers and mobile phones. But some artisanal mines are run by armed groups involved in massacres, rapes and other crimes, say UN experts and rights groups. 'Satisfaction and caution' Apple said on Tuesday that it strongly disputes the claims and has told suppliers they must not use the minerals in question sourced from DR Congo or Rwanda.                            2.5 million preschool and school age children will be de-wormed by the Anambra state government from December 7 to December 9 2016.Dr Joe Akabuike,the state Commissioner for Health,made this known to newsmen in Awka,saying that the exercise would cover children aged one to 15 years.He said that the exercise would be flagged-off by Gov.Willie Obiano of Anambra at the Central School,Isi-Anaocha in Awka North Local Government Area.The commissioner said that the state-wide exercise would hold in all public and private primary and junior secondary schools to achieve the desired objectives.He said that the exercise was aimed at reducing worm loads on children and enhance their health.According to him,the World Health Organisation {WHO} recommends periodic treatment with anthelmintic {de-worming} medicines,without previous individual diagnosis to preschool and school age living in endemic ares.''Tr...

512 NEW CASES OF HIV HAVE BEEN RECORDED IN IDPs CAMPS IN BORNO-BOSSACA.

                        Malam Barkindo Saidu,the Executive Secretary,Borno Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS {BOSACA},says 512 new cases of HIV infections have been recorded in Internally Displaced Persons {IDPs} camps in the state.He spoke ttoday sunday in Maiduguri while briefing newsmen.Saidu said that the cases were recorded after voluntary screen in some IDPs camp in the state.He pointed out that two out of the 512 persons were children.'' We are currently conducting voluntary screening on HIV/AIDS in IDPs camps across the state to determine the status of the people,especially those rescued from the Boko Haram terrorists.As at last week,we have recorded 512 positive cases,among which two are children.He saidd that the state had witnessed rising cases of the disease due largely to the Boko Haram terrorism.Currently,2.4 per cent of the population of the state are living with HIV and AIDs,which translates to 108,000 persons,...
