 Apple's statement on minerals must be 'verified': DRC International lawyers for the Democratic Republic of Congo welcomed Apple's decision to stop sourcing minerals from there due to worsening conflict, but said they would press ahead with their cases against the company in Europe. Criminal complaints were filed against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium this week on behalf of DR Congo, accusing the tech firm of using conflict minerals in its supply chain, Reuters reported. DR Congo is a major source of tin, tantalum and tungsten, so-called 3T minerals used in computers and mobile phones. But some artisanal mines are run by armed groups involved in massacres, rapes and other crimes, say UN experts and rights groups. 'Satisfaction and caution' Apple said on Tuesday that it strongly disputes the claims and has told suppliers they must not use the minerals in question sourced from DR Congo or Rwanda.  Mother, daughter, 2 others die in their sleep in Enugu There is fear and apprehension in Amaeze Community, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, following the tragic death of a yet-to-be-identified woman, her daughter and two others. The incident which happened on September 1, 2024 has engulfed the whole community in deep mourning even as the cause of the deaths were yet to be ascertained at press time. It was gathered that the four victims after having their meals last night, went to bed only to die in their sleep. While confirming the incident, the traditional ruler of the community, HRH, Igwe Felix Ugwu, said that the community was yet to recover from the shock of the incident.  rishne Khan (37), the former bookkeeper of the Northern Cricket Union convicted of embezzling R3.5 million from the entity, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.  Last March, Khan was convicted but fled before her sentencing.  A year later, she was found hiding inside a refrigerator in Nigel, where she had been living.

 Bandits think they are serving God, says Gumi Ahmad Gumi, an Islamic cleric, says bandits think they are serving by committing crimes. Gumi said this in a Facebook post on Sunday while reacting to the seizure of Mines Resistant Armour Personnels (MRAPs) by bandits. The MRAPs are said to have belonged to the military and were seized by bandits led by Bello Turji, a notorious kingpin known for his activities around the axis of Zamfara state. The elections are slated for September 21, 2024. INEC also emphasized its efforts to ensure a seamless and effective electoral process across the state’s 4,519 polling units and 211 collation centers. The election will involve 192 ward centers, 18 local government centers, and a state collation center in Benin City.   Far North Region: Lifeless Body of 14-Year-Old Boy Recovered From Water The lifeless body of a fourteen year old child was recovered from an artificial lake in the Dogba village, situated some 20 kilometers from Maroua in the Far North region by the Firefighters.  The victim, a young boy, is said to have drowned while he was swimming, late on Friday August 29, and could not be found the next day, when the search and rescue mission was organized, due do security reasons.  Sadly, the body, in an advanced state of decomposition, rejected by the waters, was recovered on Sunday September 1, and handed over to the family for the funeral.

 Police unveil identities of officers killed by Shi’ites in Abuja The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command has unveiled the identities of the officers that were murdered by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, popularly known as Shi’ites. The officers were killed when the Islamic group launched an unprovoked attack on policemen stationed at the Wuse Market Junction on August 23, 2024. About three other officers were injured and left unconscious during the attack. Spokesperson of the Command, SP Josephine Adeh identified the slain officers as ASP Innocent Agabi and Inspector Alexander Odey. While extending condolences to the deceased officers’ families, the statement noted: “As breadwinners for their families, one can only imagine the deep sorrow their loved ones are experiencing now.”

 Bike Rider Killed, Taxi Set on Fire by Separatist Fighters  Separatist fighters claiming to be members of the Fako Black Tar group have carried out a deadly attack on a bike rider in the Mile 16 Bolifamba area of Buea, South West region, on the morning of September 2, 2024. Eyewitness accounts and video footage show a taxi on fire, with heavily armed men moving around the scene.  A picture obtained by CNA reveals the lifeless body of the bike rider, who appears to have suffered fatal gunshot wounds. This latest attack comes amid the ongoing "ghost town" protests, where Mondays have been declared as days of civil disobedience.  Recent instructions from one of the separatist factions have specifically called for the burning of yellow taxis, further escalating the tension in the region. The fate of the taxi driver involved in the incident remains unknown.
