 Apple's statement on minerals must be 'verified': DRC International lawyers for the Democratic Republic of Congo welcomed Apple's decision to stop sourcing minerals from there due to worsening conflict, but said they would press ahead with their cases against the company in Europe. Criminal complaints were filed against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium this week on behalf of DR Congo, accusing the tech firm of using conflict minerals in its supply chain, Reuters reported. DR Congo is a major source of tin, tantalum and tungsten, so-called 3T minerals used in computers and mobile phones. But some artisanal mines are run by armed groups involved in massacres, rapes and other crimes, say UN experts and rights groups. 'Satisfaction and caution' Apple said on Tuesday that it strongly disputes the claims and has told suppliers they must not use the minerals in question sourced from DR Congo or Rwanda.  Kano Gov Reinstates Dethroned Emir Of Gaya, Appoints New Emirs For Karaye, Rano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the appointment of the second class emirs of Gaya, Karaye and Rano Emirates. Director General, Media and Publicity to the governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen in Kano. The newly appointed emirs are Alhaji Muhammad Maharaz Karaye as Emir of Karaye, who until his appointment was District Head of Rogo, Alhaji Muhammad Isa Umar as the emir of Rano. Until his appointment, Umar was the district head of Bunkure. The deposed emir of Gaya, Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim Abdulkadir Gaya, was reinstated as emir of Gaya. According to the FBI in the indictment filed on May 14 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, Atlanta Division, Messrs Inegbedion and Igbe perpetrated romance scams and business email compromise posing as legit businesses to defraud innocent American citizens between April 2020 and May 2023. Mr Inegbedion, a network engineer who ran training programmes for aspiring tech workers in Atlanta, was known previously to law enforcement, documents said.  Joe Bryant, father of NBA great Kobe Bryant, dead at 69 Former NBA player Joe Bryant, the father of Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant, has died. He was 69.  La Salle head coach Fran Dunphy told The Philadelphia Inquirer on Tuesday that Bryant passed away after recently suffering a massive stroke. His death comes more than four years after his son and granddaughter, Gigi, tragically died in a helicopter crash in Southern California on Jan. 26, 2020.  Seven other people onboard also died in that crash.  La Salle University, where Joe Bryant played and eventually returned as an assistant coach in 1993, confirmed the news on social media.  "We are saddened to announce the passing of La Salle basketball great Joe Bryant," the statement posted to X read.  Kano Assembly passes bill to create second-class emirates The Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the Kano State Emirates Council Establishment Bill 2024 after the bill scaled a third reading. The bill was sponsored by a lawmaker representing the Rimin Gado/Tofa state constituency, Muhammad Bello Bututu. The bill seeks to establish Kano as a first-class emirate while Rano, Gaya and Karaye would remain second-class emirates. According to the bill, Emirs of the three second-class emirates would be answerable to the Emir of Kano and shall have powers to advise him on any matter relating to the maintenance of public order, boundary dispute or dispute between two or more people within their areas of jurisdiction.

 Kano State Govt files fresh charge against Ganduje The Kano State Government on Tuesday filed fresh charge against former governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje. In the charge sheet with case No. K/143c/24, the state government accused Ganduje and erstwhile Commissioner for Justice, Musa Lawan, of Criminal Conspiracy, and misappropriation contrary to Section 308 and punishable under Section 309 of the Penal Code (as amended) CAP 105, Vol. 2, the Laws of Kano State of Nigeria. The offence, the state government said, is contrary punishable under Section 97 and Section 315. The state government accused Ganduje and Lawan of abuse of office. In the charge sheet, the state government said it intends to present four witnesses. No date has been fixed for the arraignment.

Ajaero warned that organised labour would not accept a situation where governors working with the members of the National Assembly would imposed slave wage and poverty on workers and Nigerian citizens. At least one person was killed in renewed anti-government protests across Kenya on Tuesday. In Nairobi's city centre, riot police fired tear gas at several dozen protesters and medics were seen carrying away an injured person on a stretcher. In Nakuru, a journalist was shot, with  television footage showing her bleeding from her thigh. Taking to social media, he cursed the sellers, saying “It will never be well with people that sell fake alcohol. Amen.” This incident recalls a similar experience last December when singer BNXN called out a lounge for selling him adulterated and fake alcoholic beverages at the same price as authentic ones. BNXN stressed the importance of respecting customers’ health and money, warning that he would expose the lounge if it happened again.
