 ICC issues arrest warrant for Central African Republic militia leader, Beina The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Edmond Beina, a suspected leader of a militia group, TRT Afrika reported. Beina is accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including mass killings, murder, rape, and persecution, committed in the Central African Republic (CAR) in 2014. The warrant, issued in 2018 but made public recently, alleges that Beina led attacks on Muslim civilians in the western part of the country. In one particularly incident, his group is accused of storming a village and executing dozens of men and boys.  Nigerians use 336 gigabytes per second – NCC The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced a significant surge in daily data usage, with a 39% increase from last year, averaging 336 gigabytes per second. This growth underscores the country’s shift towards a data-driven lifestyle. Executive Vice Chairman Maida Wada shared these insights at the 93rd Telecom Consumer Parliament in Abuja. However, despite this growth, many consumers express frustration over rapid data depletion.  Maida emphasized that Nigeria is not alone in addressing these concerns, citing countries like Botswana as example. He said the NCC has taken steps to address these issues, analyzing consumer complaints and identifying data depletion and billing as primary concerns.  Reps demand data on citizens displaced by natural disasters The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called for data on the internally displaced persons in Nigeria as well as those in the neighbouring countries rendered homeless by natural disasters. He made the call during a courtesy call on him by the Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and IDPs, Tijani Ahmed, in Abuja, on Wednesday.  Cameroon: Another Accident Claims 4 Lives, Including Wife of Limbe Police Chief A tragic road accident occurred on Friday morning between Boumnyebel and Pouma, leaving four people dead. Among the victims was the wife of the police commissioner from Limbe, who was traveling to Yaoundé. The collision happened around 8 AM on the road connecting the two towns in Cameroon’s Centre Region. The exact cause of the crash is still unclear, but two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in the deaths of all four people involved. A witness described the scene as devastating, with significant damage to the vehicles and multiple fatalities.  Health Minister Warns Against Fake LITACOLD Medicine on the Market Cameroonian Health Minister Manaouda Malachie has issued a warning about a counterfeit medicine called LITACOLD, which is being sold in the country. The medicine is meant to relieve nasal congestion and sinus issues, but it is not authorized for sale in Cameroon. The minister explained that the genuine LITACOLD, which was approved for sale in Cameroon in 2018, is manufactured by GENERIC HEALTHCARE PVT Ltd from India. However, a version of LITACOLD, produced by a different company, MEDICALE PHARMACEUTIQUE, does not have the proper approval to be sold in the country. Manaouda Malachie has urged the public and health professionals to be cautious and ensure that the fake LITACOLD is not in their stock. If found, it should be immediately removed from distribution and put under quarantine. This alert comes as part of ongoing efforts to protect public health and prevent the spread of counterfeit drugs. More photos below.

 An independent investigation panel established by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has cleared the military of allegations that it carried out forced abortions on women impregnated by Boko Haram terrorists.  The panel, chaired by retired Supreme Court Justice Abdu Aboki, was formed in February 2023 after a Reuters report on December 7, 2022, claimed the military had forcibly terminated about 10,000 pregnancies between 2013 and 2021 as part of a strategy to prevent children fathered by Boko Haram members from being born. Following hearings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states, the NHRC stated it found no evidence supporting the claims.  The NHRC clarified that any cases of abortion in hospitals were legally conducted for medical reasons, with data showing 5,945 cases of procedures used to complete miscarriages across three states between 2013 and 2023.  3 arrested, charged in connection with singer Liam Payne’s death Three people have been charged in connection with the death of One Direction star Liam Payne, Argentinian authorities have said.  The singer died on 16 October after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires. Argentina's National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office said one person who had been accompanying Payne is accused "the abandonment of a person followed by death". Newborn baby has been dumped inside gutter in Umuahia A newborn baby has been dumped in the gutter in Umuahia by an unknown person. The baby was discovered inside the deep gutter at Umuwaya Road, opposite Abam Street,in the Abia State capital on Thursday. As at Thursday evening, it was not certain if the child is still alive or not. The crowd that gathered at the scene of the incident rained curses on anyone who committed the dastardly act. According to them, the mother should have taken the baby to the Abia State government, church or a motherless babies home, instead of throwing it away. Abia State Police Command could not be reached for comments on the matter. One more photo below.

 Nigeria has joined seven other African countries in the Brilliant Consortium, a collaborative initiative focused on developing HIV vaccines in sub-Saharan Africa. South Africa, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Mozambique are participating in this significant research effort.  In Nigeria, the initiative is led by the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) with support from the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), USAID and other international partners. At an event in Abuja, the Director-General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, said though current prevention measures were yielding results, a vaccine was essential to achieving lasting solution.

On September 21, the body of the 27-year-old music star was exhumed by the police for autopsy.  Protest rocks Abuja over mass demolitions by FCT Minister Wike Residents of Ruga, a settlement along Airport Road, Abuja, took to the streets on Friday to protest the demolition of their homes by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Wike had previously ordered a task force, “Operation Sweep,” to demolish Ruga and other communities within the nation’s capital to clear the city of perceived nuisances and criminal activities. Leading the demonstration, renowned lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju, along with Vincent Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMark, said the demolition was carried out with malicious intent. Adeyanju expressed concern, stating that the task force burned many houses and destroyed property worth millions of naira. He urged President Bola Tinubu to consider the plight of poor people who had been driven from their homes in Borno and other northern states due to insecurity in the region.

 Adelabu directs ‘immediate overhaul’ of national grid Adebayo Adelabu, the minister of power, has asked the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and other relevant agencies to immediately implement recommendations to overhaul the grid. Adelabu spoke on Thursday, according to a statement by Bolaji Tunji, special adviser to the minister of power on strategic communications and media. On October 22, the minister set up a committee to address the incessant grid collapses. Tunji said the committee recommended an audit and testing of existing equipment and improvement in the maintenance of the transmission equipment and lines. “The committee called for significant investments from the government and the private sector,” Tunji quoted the minister as saying. “They also recommended the development of a framework and to adopt reliability-centered maintenance. “The committee identified critical ongoing projects for speedy completion, [and] also recommended the replacement of aged and obsolete e
