 Apple's statement on minerals must be 'verified': DRC International lawyers for the Democratic Republic of Congo welcomed Apple's decision to stop sourcing minerals from there due to worsening conflict, but said they would press ahead with their cases against the company in Europe. Criminal complaints were filed against Apple subsidiaries in France and Belgium this week on behalf of DR Congo, accusing the tech firm of using conflict minerals in its supply chain, Reuters reported. DR Congo is a major source of tin, tantalum and tungsten, so-called 3T minerals used in computers and mobile phones. But some artisanal mines are run by armed groups involved in massacres, rapes and other crimes, say UN experts and rights groups. 'Satisfaction and caution' Apple said on Tuesday that it strongly disputes the claims and has told suppliers they must not use the minerals in question sourced from DR Congo or Rwanda.  CBN denies selling FX at N1,301/$ to BDCs The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed claims that it is selling foreign exchange (FX) to eligible Bureau de Change (BDC) operators at N1,301 per dollar. In a statement posted on X on Tuesday, the CBN clarified that a widely circulated document suggesting such a transaction did not originate from the bank. The fake circular claimed that BDCs were permitted to sell FX to eligible end-users at a margin of no more than 1% above the purchase rate from the CBN.  An Indiana couple is facing serious charges after locking their toddler in a closet with a space heater, resulting in her death. 21-year-old Sintia Perez and 23-year-old Jace Hirschy are facing charges of felony neglect resulting in death and neglect of a dependent after a heartbreaking incident on November 29th. Berne Police responded to a report of an unresponsive child. Once on scene, they were directed to a crib in a closet where they found a 2-year-old girl deceased. First responders have reported the closet had an overwhelming heat disparity with the rest of the home. They said the closet was in disarray, filled with trash and dirty diapers. The child was found on a "very soiled mattress" with a body temperature of 109.4 degrees. That is incredibly sad.  When questioning the mother, she informed officers that they had "placed the child in the closet around 7 p.m. the night before with a space heater set on the highest setting and didn't check on her until 3 p....

 A 26-year-old Spanish woman has been arrested for allegedly defrauding over 300 men using a cheap smartphone and a photo editing app.   According to Spanish police, the woman operated a sophisticated scam over the past eight months, extorting nearly £13,500 (around Rs 15 lakh) from her victims. The woman, apprehended in Azkoitia near San Sebastian, manipulated her victims by creating fake compromising images. She used a photo montage app to superimpose their faces onto AI-generated bodies and then threatened to share these images publicly and with their families unless they paid her. Police discovered evidence of her crimes on her phone, including 3,500 chat logs documenting her blackmail schemes. Despite limited resources, the woman was highly skilled in deceiving and intimidating her victims, making her scam both effective and damaging.  Human Rights Day: SERAP and NGE Urge End to Media Crackdown in Nigeria On International Human Rights Day, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) called for an end to the harassment and repression of journalists and media organizations in Nigeria.  The groups condemned the use of laws like the Cybercrimes Act and National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) codes to intimidate journalists and stifle free expression. They highlighted a surge in press attacks in 2024, with 110 incidents recorded, and urged Nigerian authorities to respect media freedom and uphold constitutional rights. The groups also called for investigations into human rights violations against journalists and reforms to repressive laws.

The ACF urged the Tinubu administration to focus on providing good governance to Nigerians rather than being preoccupied with the 2027 presidential election.  The comment was made by Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, who advised northern political leaders planning to run in 2027 to wait until 2031, after Tinubu’s second term.  Taraba Governor Kefas's Sister Dies from Gunshot Wounds Following Police Escort Incident Atsi Kefas, the sister of Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, has tragically died from gunshot injuries sustained when she was accidentally shot by a police escort during an attempted bandit attack. The incident took place last Thursday on Kente Road in Wukari Local Government Area, Taraba State, as Atsi Kefas and the governor's mother, Jumai Kefas, were traveling. Gunmen ambushed the vehicle, and in the ensuing chaos, a police officer assigned to protect the family unintentionally shot Atsi while attempting to repel the attackers. Atsi was immediately transported to an Abuja hospital for treatment, but unfortunately, she passed away from her injuries. Sources close to the family confirmed her death, expressing condolences to the grieving family. The governor's office has yet to release an official statement.

The Fund’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, highlighted this target during the launch of the SERVICOM unit in Abuja.  NELFUND continues to provide financial support to students for institutional fees and upkeep loans, with an estimated 400,000 new students expected to register this year. While addressing the needs of out-of-school children is a priority, NELFUND's mandate is limited to tertiary education.

The theft is said to have occurred between September 17, 2019, and May 5, 2022, as well as from August 3, 2023, to December 5, 2024, at the ATC Nigeria Base Station in Ogijo. The accused face two charges: fraudulent appropriation of electricity and unlawful diversion of power, both of which are punishable under the Criminal Code laws of Ogun State.  Bandits Abduct 12, Injure 2 in Separate Attacks on Katsina Communities Armed bandits have launched two separate attacks in Funtua and Dandume Local Government Areas of Katsina State, abducting 12 individuals and injuring two others. Reports indicate that in Unguwar Dahiru, Funtua LGA, the bandits injured two people and abducted at least ten individuals, including both men and women. Earlier in the day, another group of bandits blocked a road near Jarumai in Dandume LGA, kidnapping two travelers and stealing their motorcycles. A resident of Unguwar Dahiru, Bala Ishiaku, reported that the families of the victims have not yet been contacted for ransom. He added that the local community is living in constant fear, with many residents fleeing the area out of concern that the bandits may return for further attacks.

 Austrian Police Discover Body of Homicide Victim 25 Years Later A body discovered by construction workers in the cellar of a Vienna apartment building had been buried there for 25 years, Austrian police revealed on Tuesday. In April, workers found the decomposing remains wrapped in plastic bags, buried in the cellar floor of an apartment block in the Margareten district after being alerted by a foul smell. Extensive forensic investigations confirmed that the victim, believed to be around 30 years old at the time of death, was a homicide victim who had been buried at the location for approximately 25 years. Authorities have released photos of the man's burgundy tracksuit in an effort to gather more information. Despite international police cooperation and comparisons with database records, the identity of the victim remains unknown. The workers had been excavating the basement in preparation for a new concrete floor when the body was discovered.
