Delta Governor Pledges to Blacklist Non-Compliant Contractors

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has vowed to sanction and blacklist contractors who deliver substandard projects under his administration.

Speaking on Tuesday during an inspection of ongoing projects in the state capital, Oborevwori also warned that site engineers who approve shoddy work for payment would face strict penalties.

The governor expressed disappointment over the subpar quality of drainage work on the 6.5-kilometer Achalla-Ibusa Road project, emphasizing his administration's zero tolerance for poor-quality projects.

“I decided to inspect this project following unsatisfactory feedback from previous evaluators. The drainage work here is unacceptable. While it won’t affect the stone basing and asphalting of the road, we cannot accept such substandard work,” he said.

Oborevwori further outlined his administration's commitment to prioritizing quality road inspections in 2025, ensuring that only top-standard projects are commissioned.

“This year, we’re intensifying inspections. Any contractor delivering poor work will not be paid, and if already paid, the responsible site engineer will be held accountable. This is a warning to all contractors—if you want to earn my respect, deliver quality work. Substandard work will not be tolerated,” the governor stated.

He assured residents that funds would only be allocated to projects providing value for money.

“From January, I’ve committed to personally inspecting projects, not just in Asaba but across all 25 local government areas. Contractors who fail to report to their sites or delay work will face contract revocation, and the projects will be reassigned to reliable hands.

“Our dry season is critical for construction, and over the next four months, we aim to complete and commission significant projects. By our second year in office, we want to celebrate tangible progress in roads, health, education, and other sectors,” he said.

The governor also highlighted plans to award more projects across various sectors in 2025, promising residents they will witness unprecedented development.

During the inspection, Oborevwori visited key sites, including the recently completed two-kilometer road leading to the 63 Brigade Barracks of the Nigerian Army in Aboh-Ogwashi, the gully erosion site along the Okpanam-Ibusa bypass, the perimeter fence and access road around Asaba International Airport, and the Kwekagbor Layout near Summit Junction, Asaba.
