A somber mood enveloped Jos on Thursday after eight students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) lost their lives in a catastrophic crash along the busy Zaria Road corridor in the early hours of the morning.
The students were returning from a night outing around 2:00 a.m. in two hired buses when disaster struck. According to accounts from the two survivors, one of the vehicles was violently hit from behind by a speeding trailer shortly after crossing the Zaria Road Stadium.
The force of the impact sent the bus spiraling out of control until it crashed into an electric pole near the Farin Gada bridge. The wreckage was torn apart, killing all eight occupants including the driver on the spot.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) later moved the bodies to a mortuary, describing the scene as “devastating,” with several victims severely mutilated.
The two survivors, who were seated at the rear of the ill-fated bus, sustained only minor injuries. The second bus in the convoy, untouched by the crash, safely conveyed the remaining students away from the area.
As of the time of filing this report, the trailer driver remains at large. The vehicle sped off after the collision and is not yet to be traced by authorities.
