EL SALVADOR REMOVES PRESIDENTIAL TERM LIMITS AND LENGTHENS TERMS. (PHOTO).

Image
El Salvador removes presidential term limits and lengthens terms El Salvador’s lawmakers approved constitutional reforms to eliminate presidential term limits and extend the presidential term from five to six years, potentially allowing President Nayib Bukele to stay in power indefinitely. The changes, passed by Bukele’s New Ideas Party in the Legislative Assembly, remove restrictions that previously barred presidents from serving consecutive terms. This vote comes about 18 months after Bukele secured a second term in a landslide victory, despite constitutional bans on immediate re-election, which the country’s Supreme Court—packed with Bukele allies—overturned, citing human rights grounds. The move sparked strong criticism from opposition politicians and human rights groups, who warn it undermines democratic checks and risks turning El Salvador into a one-party state. Opposition lawmaker Marcela Villatoro declared, “Today, democracy has died in El Salvador.” Human Rights Watch ca...

BRAZIL’S SUPREME COURT HOLDS GROUND ON BOLSONARO TRIAL DESPITE INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE. (PHOTO).

Image
Brazil’s Supreme Court holds ground on Bolsonaro trial despite international pressure Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes declared Friday that the court will not be swayed by sanctions or foreign interference regarding the upcoming trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro, expected later this year. De Moraes, who is leading the criminal case against Bolsonaro, did not directly mention the United States or Donald Trump, despite rising tensions between the two countries this week. The U.S. Treasury Department recently sanctioned De Moraes, accusing him of suppressing freedom of expression, while Trump signed an executive order imposing a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports. The U.S. cited what it described as “political persecution” of Bolsonaro as justification for these actions. Bolsonaro faces trial over allegations that he tried to cling to power after losing the 2022 election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. De Moraes confirmed that the trial process is in its...

Judge Sandra Liliana Heredia issued the historic ruling on Thursday, marking the first criminal conviction of a former Colombian president in the nation’s recent judicial history. The decision has deeply divided Colombia: supporters of Uribe call it “political persecution,” while victims of human rights abuses see it as a long-overdue step toward justice. Uribe’s legal team plans to appeal the sentence before Bogotá’s Superior Court on August 11, which could delay enforcement while the appeal is underway. The case originated in 2012 when Uribe, then a senator, filed charges against Senator Iván Cepeda Castro, accusing...

This was done by the founder and Managing Director of Space in Africa, Dr. Temidayo Oniosun.
