LIBERAL JUSTICES CRITICIZE SUPREME COURT'S APPROVAL OF NITROGEN GAS EXECUTION IN ALABAMA . (PHOTO).

Image
Liberal justices criticize Supreme Court's approval of nitrogen gas execution in Alabama  Justice Sonia Sotomayor sharply criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to allow Alabama to proceed with a nitrogen hypoxia execution, calling the method cruel, psychologically tormenting, and unconstitutional. Writing Thursday in a dissent joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sotomayor offered a vivid description of what the execution would entail, urging readers to imagine being suffocated while fully conscious. Sotomayor detailed how inmate Anthony Boyd, convicted of a 1995 murder, would be strapped to a gurney and forced to breathe nitrogen gas, causing intense psychological distress for up to four minutes before death. She contrasted this with Boyd’s request to die by firing squad, which would result in near-instantaneous death, saying Alabama denied him the “barest form of mercy.” The dissent highlighted previous nitrogen hypoxia executions in Alabama and Louis...

ECUADOR REDUCES DIESEL PRICES SLIGHTLY AS NATIONAL STRIKE CONCLUDES. (PHOTO).

Image
Ecuador reduces diesel prices slightly as national strike concludes Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced a modest reduction in diesel prices, lowering the cost from $2.80 per gallon to $2.78 on Dec. 15 and further to $2.70 in February. The decision comes shortly after the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador ended a month-long national strike that had blocked major roads to protest the government’s elimination of diesel subsidies, which had increased prices by about $1 per gallon. Noboa emphasized that the price adjustment would help the productive and transport sectors plan ahead and protect households and the economy. The new pricing system, set to take effect Dec. 13, will allow diesel prices to fluctuate based on international oil rates, adjusting up to 5% higher or 10% lower per month depending on West Texas Intermediate crude. The Indigenous Confederation, while ending the strike, criticized government repression that resulted in at least three deaths,...

Alabama carries out nitrogen hypoxia execution of man asserting innocence Alabama executed death row inmate Anthony Boyd on Thursday using nitrogen hypoxia, a method Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor called “torturous suffocation.” Boyd, 53, was put to death at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore, Alabama, for a 1993 murder he has long denied committing. Boyd had been sentenced for the killing of Gregory Huguley, who was burned alive over a $200 cocaine debt. Court records show Boyd and co-defendants restrained Huguley, doused him with gasoline, and set him on fire. Boyd maintained his innocence throughout his decades-long legal battle, claiming he was at a birthday party and a motel the night of the murder. His appeals, including requests to block the use of nitrogen hypoxia or have his execution carried out by firing squad, were rejected. The U.S. Supreme Court denied a stay on Thursday, and Boyd was pronounced dead at 6:33 p.m. CDT. The execution drew crit...
