Alvarez described the allegations as “speculation” and “urban legends” following a Saturday hearing in Hermosillo, northern Mexico. If convicted, Chávez could face four to eight years in prison. The 39-year-old, who joined the hearing virtually from a detention facility, had been living in the U.S. for several years. The area is frequently used by residents attempting to reach food distribution points. The deaths underscore growing humanitarian concerns as parts of Gaza face famine and Israel prepares for an offensive in the city’s northern districts. A U.N.-backed assessment recently declared famine in Gaza City, warning it could spread without a ceasefire or eased aid restrictions, though Israel disputes the findings. Witnesses said the four were shot as troops opened fire on a crowd approaching a site run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. TEXAS AND FLORIDA MOVE TO JOIN LAWSUIT CHALLENGING ABORTION PILL. (PHOTO).

Image
Texas and Florida move to join lawsuit challenging abortion pill Texas and Florida on Friday requested permission from a federal judge to join a lawsuit aimed at limiting access to the abortion pill mifepristone, arguing they must protect their own abortion policies amid shifting laws in other Republican-led states. The case is currently spearheaded by Missouri, Kansas, and Idaho, which claim the U.S. Food and Drug Administration improperly eased restrictions on mifepristone, including allowing remote prescriptions and mail delivery. Texas and Florida contend in a court filing that the existing states may no longer fully represent the interests of all Republican-led states. They cited legal changes that have affected Missouri and Idaho’s bans on elective abortions, as well as a Kansas Supreme Court decision affirming broad abortion rights, which they say weaken the original plaintiffs’ position. The states also said they need to defend their policies against “shield laws” in other...

Two women rescued from hot tub at secluded cabin A friend’s trip to a remote cabin in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge nearly turned deadly when two women in their 80s spent too long in a hot tub and developed hyperthermia, a condition in which the body overheats and cannot cool itself. The women were unable to get out of the tub due to pre-existing mobility issues, and a third woman in the tub helped keep their heads above water while a fourth called for help. Cabin caretakers managed to remove the women from the hot tub before rescuers arrived. One was partially responsive, while the other was unresponsive and in critical condition. Emergency responders used cold water, ice, and cold compresses to lower the women’s body temperatures. After 20 to 30 minutes, both began to recover and were transferred to a hospital.
