 Atiku Meets Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Saturday paid a visit to former President Goodluck Jonathan at his residence in Abuja. The encounter is their first since Jonathan returned from an election observation mission in Guinea-Bissau. Sharing pictures of the meeting on his verified social media platforms on Sunday, Atiku wrote, “It was a pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.” Jonathan, who served as President from 2010 to 2015, lost his re-election bid in 2015 to Muhammadu Buhari. The visit comes days after Atiku’s official defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), having resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party over claims that the party had strayed from the principles of its founding fathers. There are indications that Atiku may emerge as the ADC’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. One more photo below.

Woman escapes lynching after drunk accused her of stealing’ his manhood in Jos A woman with known mental health challenges narrowly escaped death on Monday in Jos, Plateau State, after a mob attacked her following a false accusation by an intoxicated man who claimed she stole his manhood. According to an eyewitness who spoke to newsmen, the incident began when the heavily drunk man raised an alarm, alleging that the woman touched him, causing his manhood to disappear. Without verifying the claim, an angry mob quickly gathered and began beating and humiliating the woman with sticks, wood, and other objects. The situation escalated as some in the crowd sought tyres to set her ablaze. The eyewitness recounted that the woman was denied any chance to defend herself until individuals who recognized her intervened.  Traders Escape Death as Trailer Overturns at Umuahia Timber Market A group of traders narrowly escaped death on Tuesday morning at the Timber Industrial Market in Umuahia when a trailer loaded with timber overturned while attempting to enter the market. The incident, which occurred around 11:28 AM, resulted in the destruction of tricycles and other properties, though no lives were lost, according to eyewitness reports. Affected traders, including Mrs. Helen Onwuegbu and Oluchi Asoha, expressed gratitude for their survival despite significant losses. Speaking to our correspondent at the scene, they attributed the accident to the poor road network in the market, exacerbated by incessant flooding.  FG to Adopt Private CBT Centres for NECO SSCE by 2026 The Federal Government will begin using private and public Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres for school-based NECO SSCE exams by 2026.  Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this during the monitoring of NECO’s pilot CBT SSCE in Abuja, stating the shift will mirror JAMB’s exam model. He praised NECO’s readiness for full CBT transition and confirmed that all NECO and WAEC objective exams will go digital by November 2025, with full CBT adoption by 2026.

 CBN Maintains Interest Rate at 27.5% The Central Bank of Nigeria has retained the Monetary Policy Rate at 27.5%, following its 301st MPC meeting in Abuja. CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso said the decision was unanimous amid easing inflation, now at 22.22%. The MPC also kept the Cash Reserve Ratio at 50% for commercial banks and 16% for merchant banks, with the liquidity ratio at 30% and the asymmetric corridor at +500/-100 basis points. This marks the third consecutive hold after February and May meetings, despite earlier expectations of a rate cut by analysts and manufacturers.

 DSS, ARMY RESCUE CATHOLIC PRIEST KIDNAPPED IN MAIDUGURI DSS operatives and military troops rescued a Catholic priest who was abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in Maiduguri, Bornu State, on June 1, 2025. Reverend Father Alphonsus Afina and 10 women were kidnapped by the insurgents while travelling from Adamawa to Bornu State.  The Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese and Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno State, Most Rev. John Bakeni, praised the DSS and military officers for their gallantry in rescuing the hostages.  Reverend Father Afina served in the Archdiocese of Anchorage in Alaska in the United States from 2017 until 2024.

 EFCC Arrests 17 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Nasarawa Operatives of the Abuja Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes  Commission  on Tuesday, July 17, 2025 arrested 17 suspected internet fraudsters in Abuja.  They were apprehended at Mararaba area of Nasarawa state following credible intelligence about their suspected involvement in internet-related crime.  Items recovered  from them include five cars, 20 phones and four laptops.  FG plans to end fish importation in order to scale up domestic fish production. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has announced plans to end Nigeria’s dependence on imported fish by strengthening local production through comprehensive reforms in the aquaculture and fisheries sector. Oyetola made the announcement during a meeting with fisheries cooperative groups in Abuja, according to a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Dr. Bolaji Akinola. “Nigeria must chart a new course towards self-sufficiency in fish production. The Federal Government is fully committed to supporting the fisheries and aquaculture subsector through policy, technical support, and financial inclusion.” Oyetola also highlighted the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to empower women and youth in the sector, including the provision of start-up grants and other support initiatives..

 MAN ARRESTED FOR KPAI GIRLFRIEND FOR RITUAL IN HOTEL ROOM A man identified as Amos Daniel was arrested for allegedly killing a woman suspected to be his girlfriend in a hotel in Lagos. Daniel and two friends lodged at the hotel in Ayobo on Thursday before being joined by a woman identified as Endurance from Akwa-Ibom State. Later that evening, other lodgers alerted the hotel manager and security when they reported hearing loud and disturbing noises from Daniel's room. Upon forcing the door open, Endurance was found lifeless with large stabbing wounds in a pool of blood. Daniel was caught but his two friends managed to escape.  He confessed to recruiting his friends to murder his girlfriend for money-ritual purposes. Police detectives recovered a UTC axe, cutlass, machete, jack knives, laptop, service jungle boot, local sponge, and a big pair of scissors.

 DR CONGO PAYS FC BARCELONA N71 BILLION FOR ADVERTS  The Democratic Republic of Congo allegedly entered into a deal to pay FC Barcelona over ₦70.85 billion for a sponsorship deal that will promote tourism in the eastern African country. According to the partnership, Congo will pay FC Barcelona €10 million to €11.5 million every year for four years for rights to advertize the African country on the club's jerseys, magazine, annual reports, websites, and advertising spaces. The sponsorship will feature DR Congo as the "Heart of Africa" in terms of tourism and travel destination. It follows similar deals with AC Milan and AS Monaco at €14 million and €1.6 million respectively per season.

 FEMALE HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVIST SLUMPS, DIES A popular human rights activist in Lagos State, Comrade Obawolu Adedoja Aanu, has died. She slumped and gave up the ghost on Saturday evening. According to eyewitnesses, Aanu was full of life throughout the day at her shop. But on returning home in the evening, she slumped at the entrance of her house and died.  She was actively involved in several civil society organisations, including the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) and the People’s Conscience. A fellow activist confirmed that the deceased was a visible and vocal participant in protest marches, policy dialogues, and grassroots advocacy focused on promoting transparency and accountability in governance.

Senator Natasha Akpoti walks barefoot into National Assembly after convoy was denied entry Suspended Kogi lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, defied Senate waÅ•nings on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, as she arrived at the National Assembly on foot after her convoy was barred from entering the premises. Accompanied by activist Aisha Yesufu, Oruche Ogeamara Precious (popularly known as Mamapee), Randy Peters of Electoral Reform, and other supporters, the senator was seen walking barefoot and confidently into the Assembly complex to resume her legislative duties. The Senate had earlier cautioned Akpoti to stay away until the expiration of her suspension, warning against any attempt to forcibly return to plenary sessions. Those recalled include Hon. Douglas Akya (Makurdi South), Hon. Mrs. Becky Orpin (Gboko East), Hon. Manger Manger (Tarka), Hon. Ezrah Nyiyongu (Ukum), Hon.  Awka Court Jails 10 for Internet Fraud   Justice Evelyn Anyadike of the Federal High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State has convicted and sentenced 10 internet fraudsters to various jail terms. The convicts are; Onyekwulu Lawrence Obiajulu, Onyedikachi Favour Eze, Olisa Philemon Olijo, Okafor Shedrack Chidindu, Ogbodo Chisom Ugochukwu, Nweke Godswill Chinemerem, Oseloka Ogo Patrick, Nnaji Pascal Chijioke, Chibueze Obumneme Frank-Gabriel and Ibekwe Jonathan. They were prosecuted by the Enugu zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on separate charges, bordering on impersonation, possession of fraudulent documents and money laundering. One of the charges against Olijo reads: “That you, Olisa Philemon Olijo sometime in 2025, at Enugu, within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, directly retained the sum of N4,600,000 paid into your account number 5492732757 domiciled with Moniepoint Microfinance Bank which you reasonable ought ...
