CHRISTMAS EVENTS RETURN TO BETHLEHEM AFTER TWO YEARS OF GAZA WAR. (PHOTO).

Christmas events return to Bethlehem after two years of Gaza war  Families filled John Juka’s long-quiet restaurant on Saturday evening, marking a dramatic shift from the past two years when Bethlehem’s streets sat dark, shuttered, and silent. Strings of red lights now glow across the city, reflecting a slow but meaningful return of Christmas traditions to the historic birthplace of Jesus in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. After years of upheaval following the Gaza war, residents say the renewed festivities offer a fragile but welcome sign of relief and resilience. Juka, who watched his family’s restaurant sit empty through two holiday seasons, described the moment simply: “It’s not like it was before the war, but it feels like life is coming back again.” Bethlehem’s identity and livelihood are deeply tied to tourism, with the majority of its residents depending on pilgrims and visitors to keep the local economy moving. When the war erupted after the Hamas-led attack on Israe...

Trump administration restarts student loan forgiveness for certain borrowers, trade group reports The Trump administration has resumed forgiving student loan debt for some borrowers enrolled in the Income-Based Repayment (IBR) program, which had been partially paused since July. Borrowers who have been in repayment for decades and qualify for debt cancellation under IBR are reportedly receiving notices that they will soon have their loans discharged. Scott Buchanan, executive director of the Student Loan Servicing Alliance, confirmed that IBR discharges have restarted. Consumer advocates also said they have heard from borrowers recently approved for relief. The Department of Education paused IBR forgiveness over the summer while addressing court rulings affecting the Biden-era SAVE plan, which had allowed certain periods of paused payments to count toward forgiveness. The pause left many long-term borrowers frustrated, as IBR remains one of the few income-driven repayment options ...

We’re Backing Our Policies With Laws Because We Don’t Know Who Is Coming After Us -Governor Sule  “One of the things we did was construct a building known as the Multidoor Court House. That is where, if you are coming in for the ease-of-doing business, the day you arrive, someone will handhold you through the entire process, from registration to land acquisition. If there is going to be any kind of problem, there is an on-ground dispute resolution team that will assist you through the legal fireworks.  “We are backing our policies with laws because we don’t know who is coming after us. Whether they will be as serious or as committed to investment as we are. That is why we are backing everything with law. In fact, Nasarawa is one of the seven states that qualified for SABER, a World Bank facility to protect and attract investment.” -Governor Sule At 31st Nigerian Economic Summit In Abuja

INFLATION DROP: WORLD BANK RAISES NIGERIA, OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES’ GROWTH FORECAST. (PHOTO).

Image
Inflation Drop: World Bank raises Nigeria, other African Countries’ Growth Forecast The World Bank has said that Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African economies are expected to grow by a faster 3.8% this year on the back of stable prices that have spurred easing by policymakers. The development followed the Central Bank of Nigeria’s easing of interest rates from 27.5 per cent to 27 per cent last month. The WB upgraded growth forecasts for Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Ivory Coast – all major economies in the region. It said real incomes are also growing at a faster rate this year and into the next two years. “While this marks a gradual recovery from a decade of successive shocks, the rebound has yet to gain strong momentum,” it said in the report. The upgrade from 3.5% in April was driven by stabilising foreign exchange and inflation rates in countries like Ethiopia, giving room for interest rate cuts, the bank said in its biannual Africa Pulse report, according to Reuters.  'I am fully all in' - Kane open to new Bayern deal Harry Kane says his interest in returning to the Premier League has cooled and he is willing to open talks with Bayern Munich about a new contract. Kane is halfway through the four-year deal he signed when joining from Tottenham Hotspur for £86.4m in the summer of 2023. The 32-year-old has scored 103 goals in 106 appearances for the German club, helping them win the 2024-25 Bundesliga title - the first honour of his career. Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has said he would like to see Kane return to England, where he needs 48 goals to eclipse Alan Shearer's all-time Premier League scoring record of 260. But the England captain says he is no longer as keen on returning home as he once was, and would consider extending his stay in Bavaria. "In terms of staying longer, I could definitely see that," he said. "I spoke openly a couple of weeks ago that I have not had those conversations with Bayern yet, but if they...

Nigeria seeks $2bn china loan for new ‘super grid’ — Adelabu Nigeria is in discussion with China’s Export-Import Bank for a $2 billion loan to finance a new “super grid” to ease the country’s power shortages. According to Bloomberg, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, disclosed this during an economic summit in Abuja on Monday. Adelabu explained that the project is part of government efforts to decentralise power generation and encourage large-scale industrial users who left the national grid due to its unreliability to reconnect. The new transmission infrastructure will link the eastern and western regions of the country, where most of Nigeria’s industrial consumers are located. “It’s part of plans to decentralise power generation in Nigeria and get the heavy commercial users that left the power grid because of its unreliability to return,” he said. The power grid has experienced multiple collapses over the years, often attributed to inadequate generation capacity, transmissi...

Image
Natasha returns to plenary as Senate resumes today Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central is expected to make a dramatic return to the Senate today (Tuesday) after serving out her six-month suspension, but not without tension hanging in the air. Her lawyer, Victor Giwa, confirmed the development in an interview with Punch, insisting that his client is legally cleared to resume plenary duties. “The worst is over,” Giwa said confidently. “Our client should go straight and resume on Tuesday. Anything else is just opinion. The Senate cannot legalise illegality.” He warned that any attempt by the Senate leadership to block her entry would amount to “total chaos,” stressing that the upper chamber must abide by its own resolutions. “Blocking her again means the Senate is contradicting itself. She has served her suspension. Anything further would be pure lawlessness,” Giwa added. The Senate had extended its annual recess by two weeks, shifting its resumption from September 23 to ...

LAGOS DEMOLITIONS: LAW, JUSTICE, AND COMPASSION- PETER OBI. (PHOTO). #PRESS RELEASE.

Lagos Demolitions: Law, Justice, and Compassion A week ago, a team of concerned leaders visited the demolished Aspamda Market in Lagos. Since then I have carefully followed the reactions trailing the demolitions, our visit, and feel that other extraneous variables are affecting our compassion for each other as Nigerians. The situation calls for deep reflection on the relationship between law, justice, and compassion in governance. I recall an incident in the nineties, when I bought a house in the UK at 66 Donnington Road, NW10. While the building was still being refurbished, some squatters moved in. When I consulted my lawyer, he advised that I should write to them formally and approach the court. It would have been unthinkable for the state to simply wake up one morning and demolish people’s houses  - especially when such houses were neither used for crime nor taken for any overriding public purpose. Those seeking to justify the current demolitions in Aspamda Market Lagos, a...

TRADE FAIR DEMOLITION: PETER OBI’S HYPOCRISY AND HIS FREE FALL INTO POLITICAL RIDICULE. (PHOTO).#PRESS RELEASE..

Image
Trade Fair Demolition: Peter Obi’s Hypocrisy and His Free Fall into Political Ridicule The attention of the Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to yet another unsolicited sermon from Mr. Peter Obi, urging the Lagos State Government to “temper law with compassion” in the ongoing demolition of illegal structures at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex. Ordinarily, we would have ignored Obi’s latest outburst, but his trademark hypocrisy deserves to be called out. The same Peter Obi who, as Governor of Anambra State, ordered the demolition of illegal structures - including markets, shops, and residential buildings - without batting an eyelid, now seeks to play the saint when Lagos enforces the law. At that time, he offered neither compassion nor consultation. Today, he suddenly discovers empathy when it suits his politics of deceit and opportunism. It is clear that Mr. Obi’s politics thrives on selective morality and deliberate mischief. His...
