The bacteria can cause severe illness when ingested through raw or undercooked seafood or if an open wound is exposed to seawater. This year, Louisiana has reported 22 cases leading to hospitalization, with more than 80% linked to seawater exposure. The Louisiana Health Department noted that roughly one in five people infected with Vibrio vulnificus dies, sometimes within a day or two of symptom onset. SOME SWASTIKAS REMAIN ON FINLAND’S AIR FORCE FLAGS, BUT THEY ARE BEING PHASED OUT. (PHOTO).

Image
Some swastikas remain on Finland’s air force flags, but they are being phased out Finland’s Air Force, now part of NATO, still has a few unit flags displaying swastikas, but plans are underway to remove them, mainly to avoid awkwardness with Western allies. The swastika has a long history in Finland and was adopted by the air force in 1918, long before the rise of Nazi Germany. The symbol originally came from Count Eric von Rosen, who donated Finland’s first military plane and used the blue-on-white swastika as his personal emblem. The Air Force has been gradually phasing out the symbol over the past several years, including removing it from the Air Force Command’s unit emblem. The remaining swastikas appear on a handful of unit flags, raising concern among NATO allies and foreign visitors. Officials said the plan to replace the flags was launched in 2023, the year Finland joined NATO, though they stressed it is not directly tied to alliance membership. New flags featuring an eagle wil...

TEXAS LAWMAKERS SUPPORT LETTING CITIZENS SUE TO BLOCK MAIL-ORDER ABORTION PILLS. (PHOTO).

Image
Texas lawmakers support letting citizens sue to block mail-order abortion pills Lawmakers in Texas advanced legislation Thursday aimed at restricting the distribution of mail-order abortion pills from states such as New York and California. The bill would allow nearly any individual to sue doctors, distributors, and manufacturers nationwide, with the potential to collect substantial financial awards. Supporters say the law could serve as a model for other states seeking to limit medication abortions by exposing providers and shipping companies to lawsuits. The measure is designed to deter the delivery of abortion pills into Texas, even from states where the procedure remains legal, by making legal liability a significant risk. Under the legislation, people could sue for a minimum of $100,000 per violation, with a portion directed to charity if the plaintiff is unconnected to the case. The bill also blocks “shield laws” in other states from being used as a defense against these law...

Image
US blocks Palestinian officials from attending UN General Assembly  The Trump Administration announced Friday that it will not issue visas to senior Palestinian officials seeking to travel to New York for the UN General Assembly in September, and it will revoke visas that had already been granted. The move is widely seen as a response to planned initiatives by several Western countries to recognize a Palestinian state during the annual gathering, highlighting a split in international policy toward Gaza and the Palestinian leadership, with the U.S. and Israel on one side and much of the rest of the world on the other. The State Department cited the Palestinian Authority’s failure to clearly condemn the October 7 attack, alleged incitement to terrorism in its education system, and ongoing international lobbying for recognition as reasons for the visa restrictions. The U.S. also referenced the PA’s legal actions against Israel, including efforts to prosecute Israeli Prime Minist...

Image
Peter Obi kicks against Int’l passport fee hike The Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has lamented the hike in International Passport fee. In a post on his official X handle on Thursday, Obi said the obsession of this administration with putting a burden on the populace is becoming legendary. DAILY POST reports that the Federal Government on Thursday announced the increase in International Passport fees. With the new increase, a 32-page booklet goes for N100,000, while 64 pages goes for N200,000. Reacting, the former Anambra state governor said in a country where the new minimum wage is only N70,000, the cost of a single passport now exceeds a worker’s monthly salary. According to him, instead of making life easier, the government keeps shifting the burden onto ordinary Nigerians. “It is alarming that the price of the international passport is higher than what workers earn in a month,” he wrote.
