Christmas events return to Bethlehem after two years of Gaza war  Families filled John Juka’s long-quiet restaurant on Saturday evening, marking a dramatic shift from the past two years when Bethlehem’s streets sat dark, shuttered, and silent. Strings of red lights now glow across the city, reflecting a slow but meaningful return of Christmas traditions to the historic birthplace of Jesus in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. After years of upheaval following the Gaza war, residents say the renewed festivities offer a fragile but welcome sign of relief and resilience. Juka, who watched his family’s restaurant sit empty through two holiday seasons, described the moment simply: “It’s not like it was before the war, but it feels like life is coming back again.” Bethlehem’s identity and livelihood are deeply tied to tourism, with the majority of its residents depending on pilgrims and visitors to keep the local economy moving. When the war erupted after the Hamas-led attack on Israe...

UK fires ambassador to US Peter Mandelson over Jeffrey Epstein ties U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has dismissed Peter Mandelson as the country’s ambassador to the United States following the release of emails revealing his close relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The decision was announced Thursday in the House of Commons by Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty, who said the newly surfaced correspondence demonstrated that the “depth and extent” of Mandelson’s ties to Epstein were “materially different” from what was known at the time of his appointment last year. The emails, dating back to the 2000s, showed Mandelson offering support to Epstein even while he was facing jail for sex offenses, with one message suggesting Epstein’s 2008 conviction was “wrongful and should be challenged.” Mandelson, who assumed his post in Washington in February following what the government described as an extensive vetting process, expressed “deep regret” over his past associ...

She was convicted in April of colluding with Menendez from 2018 to 2023 in schemes that included assisting the Egyptian government, exchanging favors for cash, gold, and a luxury car. U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein acknowledged that Nadine was neither the mastermind nor the innocent bystander portrayed during the trial, calling her role “purposeful” and significant. Prosecutors said she was the second-most culpable participant after her husband, acting decisively in selling the senator’s influence. Despite blaming her husband in part for using his power to manipulate her, Nadine a...
