NIGERIA HIGHLIGHTS CLIMATE, RESTORATION, AND CIRCULAR ECONOMY COMMITMENTS AT UNEA‑7 IN NAIROBI  Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has outlined the country’s environmental priorities and progress at the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA‑7) in Nairobi, calling for global solidarity, predictable finance and practical support to turn commitments into action. Speaking on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister Lawal said Nigeria’s updated climate pledge—its Enhanced Third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0)—commits the country to a 20% unconditional emissions reduction and up to 47% with international support by 2030, while maintaining a net‑zero target by 2060. He also noted recent domestic reforms including the operationalization of a National Carbon Market Framework, issuance of the third Sovereign Green Bond, and expanded renewable energy deployments such as solar mini‑grids, wind installations and clean cooking solutions...

YOUTHS FIGHT FLAMES WITHOUT FIRE SERVICE SUPPORT AS WANNUNE FIRE GUTS 4 HOMES

A quiet Tuesday afternoon in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, turned chaotic when a fierce fire swept through the community, destroying more than four houses and leaving families in shock.

The blaze, which began in one compound before leaping to nearby buildings, consumed property worth millions of naira. The cause of the fire remains unclear.

With no fire service in sight, despite repeated distress calls, it fell to the community’s youths and residents to battle the inferno. Armed with buckets, bowls, and any container they could lay their hands on, they fought relentlessly for hours until the flames were finally subdued.

Miraculously, no casualties were recorded. Residents say only divine intervention prevented what could have been a deadly tragedy.

Eyewitnesses voiced deep frustration over the failure of the Benue State Fire Service to respond, describing the incident as another painful reminder of the state’s weak emergency infrastructure. Many point to the lack of functional fire stations and operational vehicles across several communities as a longstanding problem that urgently needs government attention.

As smoke settles and families sift through the ruins of their homes, the community has come together, offering shelter, food, and emotional support to the victims. For now, the people of Wannune are grateful to be alive but united in their call for a stronger, more reliable fire service to prevent a repeat of this avoidable disaster.
