More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added.  2027: APC intolerant of opposition – Aregbesola

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Rauf Aregbesola, says the ruling All Progressives Congress is intolerant of opposition voices.

He said the party was using state power to silence dissent.

Aregbesola made the allegation on Saturday at the unveiling of the ADC Secretariat in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The former Interior Minister stated that the APC had failed Nigerians through greed and incompetence, which had plunged the country into hunger, insecurity, and infrastructural collapse.

“Under the current administration, hunger has taken over the land. Governance has been reduced to personal enrichment and political intimidation.

“Nigerians are suffering because of the failure of leadership at all levels under the APC,” he said.

The ex-Osun state governor also accused the ruling party of becoming oppressive towards opposition figures, describing its conduct as undemocratic.

“If the APC is confident of its strength, it would not be hounding and haunting opposition members everywhere,” Aregbesola added.

According to him, the ADC is a party of conscience and service, stressing that it represented the only credible alternative for Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
