 More than 100,000 children have been displaced by the latest escalation in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, UNICEF said on Sunday, warning the numbers are expected to rise as violence spreads. Since Dec. 1, intense fighting has uprooted more than 500,000 people, with children accounting for over 100,000 of those displaced in South Kivu alone, the UN agency said in a statement released Sunday. It said since Dec. 2, hundreds have been killed in the fighting, and children have been among the victims, with four students killed, six injured, and at least seven schools attacked or damaged. The rapid escalation has forced hundreds of thousands of children and families to flee within Congo and into neighboring Burundi and Rwanda, it added.  Gov. Uba Sani Approves Appointment Of Bature Likoro As New Agwom Kamuru


Governor Uba Sani has approved the appointment of Mr. Bature Sunday Likoro as the new Agwom Kamuru, following the passing of His Highness, Mr. Yohanna Sidi Kukah, on December 18, 2024.


In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Hon. Sadiq Mamman Lagos, the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr. Likoro was appointed as a 3rd Class Chief.


According to the statement, the new Agwom Kamuru was born on August 15, 1958, and holds a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business Administration from Kaduna Polytechnic.


The Commissioner noted that Mr. Likoro is highly respected within his community due to his distinguished record of service and commitment to community development, where he has worked closely with various stakeholders.


The statement further added that while the appointment takes immediate effect, details regarding the installation ceremony and presentation of the staff of office will be announced in due course.


Hon. Mamman Lagos also conveyed Governor Uba Sani’s congratulations to the new Agwom Kamuru, describing the appointment as well-deserved, and wishing him success and divine guidance in his new role.
