Brave Young Woman from Mabopane Speaks Out About Horrific Sexual Abuse

A young woman from Mabopane, Amogelang Matshidiso Diale, has come forward to share a painful experience of abuse and sexual violence at the hands of her then-boyfriend.

On 3 June 2023, Amogelang says she was assaulted and raped by the man she had been dating for three months. According to her, he woke her up in the middle of the night holding a shovel and threatening her. When she tried to explain she had come from a funeral, he began to beat her.

“He slapped me until I felt numb, tried to drown me, tied me with cables, and even strangled me until I passed out,” Amogelang said.

Throughout the night, she says she was tied up, choked, and violently attacked. She managed to escape in the early hours of the morning after pretending to calm him down. She ran out of the house, took what she could, and asked for help until she finally reached the police station around 3 a.m.

Amogelang’s courage in telling her story is a powerful call for awareness and action against gender-based violence. She hopes that speaking out will encourage other women in abusive situations to seek help.

She has been attending courts since 2023 to find closure.
