The National Assembly has sharply rebuked Pastor Tunde Bakare, overseer of The Citadel Global Community Church, for his critical remarks against the legislature, branding them as biased and misleading. The response follows Bakare’s Sunday sermon, where he condemned the Senate’s suspension of Senator Natasha-Akpoti Uduaghan and the lawmakers’ approval of emergency rule in Rivers State, describing the executive and legislature as contenders in an “institutional immorality Olympics.”
In a statement on Tuesday, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, accused Bakare of crossing the line with “unwarranted invective and misleading assertions” that could erode public trust in democratic institutions. Adaramodu labeled the cleric’s comments a “biased and political ecumenical homily,” suggesting they stemmed from personal frustrations or political posturing.
The Senate emphasized the need for dialogue rooted in truth and mutual respect, arguing that polarizing rhetoric undermines Nigeria’s democratic journey. Adaramodu expressed confidence that a future review of the 10th National Assembly’s performance would vindicate their actions as being in the nation’s best interest.
