Presidency Defends N10 Billion State House Solar Project Amid Criticism

The Presidency has justified the Federal Executive Council’s approval of a N10 billion solar energy project for the State House, addressing public concerns over its cost amid Nigeria’s economic challenges. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, defended the initiative on his verified X account, emphasizing its alignment with global sustainability practices.

Onanuga pointed out that the White House in Washington, D.C., also utilizes solar power, citing a video of a similar U.S. project to underscore the precedent for renewable energy in high-level government facilities.

He argued that the solar system would ensure stable electricity for the President’s residence, administrative offices, and other critical buildings in the State House complex, promoting energy efficiency and long-term cost savings.

While some Nigerians have praised the project’s environmental benefits, others have questioned its N10 billion price tag, debating its priority given widespread economic hardship. The controversy highlights ongoing tensions between government spending and public expectations during challenging economic times.
