 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali. CAPACITY BUILDING: IGP ISSUES NEW POLICY DIRECTIVE, TARGETS ENHANCED POLICE PROFESSIONALISM, STANDARDIZED CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS.


As IGP Mandates Regular Training 


In a significant move to improve police professionalism and the standardization of criminal investigations across Nigeria, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., has issued a comprehensive policy directive following a recent conference with heads of police investigation units nationwide. This initiative aims to refine investigative practices and ensure that all personnel involved in criminal investigations are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively.


The key components of the new policy include a strict process for the mobilization and demobilization of police personnel within and outside criminal investigation departments. Specialized detective training has been made mandatory for all investigative personnel, with officers who complete the training to be certified and officially recognized as detectives. 


Additionally, all personnel in investigation units will be required to participate in annual detective workshops and undergo training programs at the Force Intelligence Training School in Share, Kwara State. The IGP has further directed a strict implementation of the Child Rights Act 2003 and the United Nations Convention on the rights of the Child.


This initiative underscores the commitment of the IGP to ensure the Nigerian Police Force have an enhanced quality of investigation and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in upholding the law. The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to ensuring international best practices and respecting the rights of every individual.
