Oshiomhole Challenges JAMB on N850m Mosquito Control, Cleaning Expenses

Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC/Edo North) on Monday questioned the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over its 2024 expenditure during a budget defence session before the National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance.

Addressing JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, Oshiomhole demanded an explanation for the N850 million spent on security, cleaning, and fumigation.

“You spent N1.1 billion on meals and refreshments. Are you being fed by the government? This means you are spending money collected from poor students, including orphans,” he stated. “You also spent N850 million on fumigation. What exactly did you fumigate? Mosquitoes?”

The Senator also criticized the N600 million allocated for local travel in the same year.

In response, Prof. Oloyede revealed that JAMB remitted N4 billion to the Consolidated Revenue Fund in 2024 while receiving a N6 billion grant from the Federal Government.

House Committee on Finance Chairman, Abiodun Faleke, questioned why a revenue-generating and self-sustaining agency like JAMB continues to rely on federal funding.

“You remitted N4 billion and got N6 billion from the Federal Government. Why not retain the N4 billion and eliminate JAMB’s federal allocation?” Faleke suggested.

The lawmakers signaled a potential removal of JAMB’s budgetary allocation in the future unless the agency provides sufficient justification for its dependence on government funding.
