IMO STATE GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES CLAMPDOWN ON VANDALS OF PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE

The Imo State Government has commenced a statewide crackdown on suspected vandals of public infrastructure, following a surge in reported cases of destruction and theft of government assets across the state.

In a directive issued after a high-level meeting with Local Government Chairmen, Councillors, Supervisory Councillors, and Town Union leaders, Governor Hope Uzodimma ordered immediate action to identify and apprehend those responsible for damaging state-owned facilities.

The meeting, which took place on Monday night, addressed growing concerns over the increasing vandalism of critical infrastructure including solar streetlights, transformer components, health centre equipment, school laboratory tools, and ICT facilities in public libraries. According to the Governor, these acts not only sabotage government investments but also endanger the lives and well-being of Imo citizens.

Adding to the concern, reports indicated that some residents have been misusing newly constructed roads for bonfires during celebrations, and even as platforms for mixing construction materials—practices that significantly degrade road surfaces.

Governor Uzodimma described the situation as unacceptable, calling for immediate enforcement measures. He directed that all individuals found culpable, whether directly involved in vandalism or facilitating it in any way, be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

"Anyone found destroying government property—be it a contractor, homeowner, or community member—will face the full wrath of the law," the Governor said. He emphasized the responsibility of local government officials to act swiftly in curbing the menace.

To bolster the enforcement strategy, the Governor instructed the 27 Local Government Councils to collaborate closely with the Commissioner for Vigilante Services, Special Advisers on Security and Compliance, and the Ministry of Rural Development, among other relevant bodies.

“My job is to help you offer something tangible to your people,” Governor Uzodimma told the local officials. He stressed the importance of protecting schools, hospitals, health centres, and other public infrastructure that improve the quality of life for Imo residents.

He further reiterated the need for sustained cooperation between local councils and the state government in safeguarding public property and ensuring a secure, well-maintained environment for all.
