Florida health officials are urging caution about drinking raw milk after 21 people became ill with infections linked to the same farm’s product. The Florida Department of Health reported Monday that cases of Campylobacter and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infections have been traced to raw milk from one source, with six of those affected being children under 10 years old. The illnesses have been reported in both north and central Florida, resulting in seven hospitalizations and at least two severe complications.
The department expressed particular concern about the sanitation practices at the farm involved but did not disclose its name. Raw milk, which has not been pasteurized to kill harmful bacteria, can carry germs such as Campylobacter, E. coli, Listeria, and Salmonella. These bacteria can cause symptoms ranging from diarrhea and severe stomach cramps to dangerous conditions like hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can lead to kidney failure, especially in young children and vulnerable groups. In Florida, raw milk is legally sold only for non-human consumption like pet food, and containers must be clearly labeled as such. While many people consume raw milk without issue, experts stress that proper handling and milking procedures are critical to prevent contamination. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to strongly advocate for milk pasteurization, citing dozens of outbreaks linked to raw milk consumption since 1987.
