U.S. and Chinese officials began high-level trade talks in Paris on Sunday, setting the stage for President Donald Trump’s upcoming visit to Beijing to meet Chinese leader Xi Jinping in about two weeks. The delegations are led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. While the White House has announced Trump’s visit for March 31 to April 2, Beijing has not yet confirmed the dates.
Bessent emphasized that the U.S. team aims to secure outcomes that prioritize American farmers, workers, and businesses. Over the two-day talks, the delegations will focus on trade and economic issues of mutual concern. Trump’s visit will be his first to China since his first term in 2017 and follows a one-year truce in the U.S.-China trade war agreed upon last year in Busan, South Korea. Despite the truce, tensions remain, including over a new U.S. trade investigation into 16 trading partners, China among them, which could lead to new tariffs. Other topics, such as the Iran war and global oil supply security, may also be discussed. Analysts view the Paris talks as a critical prelude to the Xi-Trump summit, with both sides needing to reconcile differences and manage disagreements amid shifting U.S. policies. Bessent and He have previously met in Geneva, London, Stockholm, Madrid, and Kuala Lumpur as part of ongoing trade negotiations.
