It turned into a birthday moment no one expected when Ryan Gosling invited the audience to help him surprise Eva Mendes during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The couple stepped onto a stage together for the first time publicly in more than a decade on Thursday, March 5, as Gosling promoted his upcoming film, Project Hail Mary.
Midway through the interview, Gosling asked the audience if they would sing “Happy Birthday” to Mendes, who was waiting backstage. A staff member then brought her out to the set, catching her by surprise.
Before she appeared, Gosling joked to the crowd, “Here’s the thing, you might find me in the Hudson River tomorrow.”
When Mendes walked onto the stage, the audience erupted in cheers. Gosling reached for her hand and the pair stood together as the celebration unfolded.
Mendes’ outfit also drew attention. She wore Gosling’s blue and white striped Louis Vuitton cardigan, the same one he recently appeared in on Jeopardy!. She paired it with wide leg retro jeans and a black and white T shirt featuring the cover art from Double Fantasy, the 1980 record by John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
Meanwhile, Gosling appeared in a black collared shirt, black trousers and a grey double breasted blazer with gold buttons.
Once on stage, Mendes greeted the audience warmly. Spotting teachers and students among the crowd, she thanked them for their work before turning to host Jimmy Fallon with a playful question, asking, “You’ll cut all this, right?”
Fallon laughed and replied, “No!”
The celebration quickly grew bigger. Fallon revealed that band directors from North Bergen High School in New Jersey were present, and moments later the school’s marching band entered the studio playing “Happy Birthday.” They carried a large flag that read, “Happy Birthday, Eva!”
Gosling clapped and sang along as confetti fell around them. Mendes responded with a kiss on his cheek, thanking him for the surprise.
The moment was especially notable because the couple has rarely appeared together in public.
Their last red carpet outing as a pair dates back to 2013 during the New York premiere of The Place Beyond the Pines, the film where they first met in 2011.
Since then, the couple has largely kept their relationship private. They share two daughters, Esmeralda, born in 2014, and Amada, born in 2016.
