Paul Biya Appoints Son Franck Emmanuel Biya as Vice President and Head of Armed Forces

Cameroonian President Paul Biya has appointed his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice President of the Republic and Head of the Armed Forces in a move that further consolidates family control over the country’s political and military structures amid ongoing political unrest.

The appointments were announced in an official presidential decree dated 4 April 2026. The decree also names Franck Biya as Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence, placing him at the heart of Cameroon’s security apparatus.

The document explicitly states: “Mr Franck Emmanuel BIYA is appointed Vice President of the Republic of Cameroon.” It further declares him “Head of the Armed Forces” and “Minister Delegate at the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Cameroon.”

Citing constitutional provisions and defence laws, the presidency said the appointments were made in line with “service requirements.” The decree is to be registered, published under urgency procedure, and inserted in the Official Gazette.

This development follows parliament’s recent approval of a constitutional amendment reintroducing the position of Vice President, who would automatically assume the presidency in the event of Biya’s death, resignation, or incapacitation.

The move comes months after the 92-year-old (now 93) Biya was sworn in for an unprecedented eighth term following a disputed presidential election that triggered nationwide protests and international scrutiny.

Biya secured 54 percent of the vote, defeating opposition candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who obtained 35 percent. Tchiroma Bakary rejected the results, alleging widespread electoral fraud, claims the government has denied.
