Bribe-Seeking Nigerian Policeman Caught On Camera Demanding N5,000 Bribe From Motorist, Says ‘My Oga Say Make I Collect Am’

A Nigerian policeman has been caught on camera demanding a bribe of N5,000 from a motorist.

In the video, the policeman is heard telling the motorist that he was following the order of his commander. He insisted that it was against their mode of operation to collect bribes via electronic transfer.

Hence, he insisted that the car owner should branch at a Point of Sale (POS) to withdraw the demanded money and give him in cash.

He said, “We go see POS for front. Go turn. We no collect transfers, you no hear wetin I tell you. Shebi you said you get N5,000 (We will see a POS operator in front. We don’t accept money through bank transfers. Did you hear what I said? You said you have N5,000).

“Oya make we go front, you will see POS people, you will park, you transferred them, you collect ham. E don gree nah, the commander say we should collect ham. The N5,000 which say you get, our oga say make we collect ham. When we reach front there, you will see POS people, you will transfer for them. You will collect am. (Let us move to the front, you will see POS operators. When you transfer the money to them, they will give you cash in return. My boss asked me to collect the N5,000 you said was with you).”

Seeking bribes from motorists on the highway has become a habit for Nigerian police officers. For instance, in January, a police officer was also caught on camera demanding money from a motorist.

The police officer, who was also captured on camera, had insisted that the motorist would not leave unless he paid him the demanded bribe.

“Do sharp sharp and go now, if not, I will do my job,” the erring policeman said in the video.

The officer then proceeded to call his Access Bank account details out to the motorist for him to transfer the money before he would allow him to leave the spot.

In his reaction, Muyiwa Adejobi, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Police Force described the incident in the video as shameful and against their professional ethics.

“This is not allowed, so shameful. It's condemned. We need more info about this. We will fish him out,” he wrote.
