M23 says hundreds of Burundi soldiers captured in latest Congo offensive The Rwanda-backed M23 group has captured hundreds of Burundian soldiers during its latest offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a rebel official said, as clashes continued despite a warning from the Trump administration. Last week M23 entered the strategic town of Uvira near the border with Burundi, less than a week after the presidents of Congo and Rwanda met in Washington with U.S. President Donald Trump and affirmed their commitment to a peace deal known as the Washington Accords. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Saturday that Rwanda's actions in eastern Congo violated the Washington Accords and vowed to "take action to ensure promises made to the President are kept".  Super falcons ranks 36th in world Fifa rankings, maintains 1st position in Africa

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have maintained their 36th position in the most recent FIFA ranking. The update was announced on the website of the world football governing body on Friday, August 16, 2024.

In the African rankings, the Falcons still hold the top position, followed closely by South Africa’s Banyana Banyana.

The Falcons' standing in the rankings was not unexpected, considering their disappointing performance at this summer's Olympics held in Paris. The team finished at the bottom of a challenging group that included Olympic finalist Brazil, Japan, and world champions Spain.

Their matches in the group stage resulted in losses, with the Falcons being defeated by Brazil and Spain, both by a margin of 1-0. The game against Japan also ended in a 3-1 defeat, concluding their Olympic campaign in disappointment.

Zambia, another African representative at the Paris Olympics, has moved up to 62nd place in the rankings. Like the Falcons, the Zambian team also faced defeats in all three of their group stage matches in their second appearance at the Olympics.

Other African teams that saw upward movement in the rankings include South Africa, now at 50th place, and Tunisia at 58th place.

In the updated rankings, the United States of America, the champions of the Paris Olympics, have reclaimed the number one spot. Brazil, the silver medalists, have also moved up and are currently in eighth place, while Spain dropped to third.
