Meta to end end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages Meta is ending end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, a feature the company says will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. Unlike WhatsApp, Instagram never offered encryption to all users or as a default; only select users in certain regions could opt in on a per-chat basis. A Meta spokesperson explained that the decision comes due to low adoption. “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,” the spokesperson said. “Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.” Meta’s messaging strategy has shifted multiple times over the years. Two Deaths Prompt Enugu Government to Crack Down on Excesses of Oriokpa Masqueraders

The Enugu State Government has launched a comprehensive investigation into the activities of Oriokpa masquerade groups following reports of two fatalities linked to their actions in Nsukka. Chief Okey Ogbodo, the Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Affairs, confirmed the government's commitment to public safety, stating, “We will hold those responsible accountable for any harm caused to our citizens.”

In response to the chaos instigated by the masqueraders, Ogbodo announced that traditional rulers and Presidents-General from affected communities—Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere, and Umuoyo—have been summoned for a meeting on September 27. He emphasized that the government will not tolerate further excesses, asserting, “Our people should never be made to live in fear; the rights and security of every citizen must be guaranteed.”

Governor Peter Mbah has directed the Commissioner of Police to investigate the incidents thoroughly. The government expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards any group or individual that disrupts public order. “Any such excesses by the Oriokpa masqueraders or any group will be met with commensurate sanctions,” the statement concluded.
