The Australian government has urged its citizens to rethink the necessity of traveling to Nigeria.
On Tuesday, the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) released a statement highlighting a precarious security situation characterized by terrorism, kidnappings, and the possibility of civil unrest as reasons for this advisory.
"Reconsider your need to travel to Nigeria due to the unstable security environment and threats of terrorism, kidnapping, violent crime, and civil unrest.
"There is a significant risk of terrorist attacks throughout Nigeria from various militant groups. These attacks may be indiscriminate or specifically target foreign interests.
"Possible targets include crowded locations such as hotels, bars, restaurants, political gatherings, government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, sporting events, transportation hubs, law enforcement facilities, international organizations, and camps for displaced individuals.
"Reconsider your need to travel to Nigeria in general, including the capital city, Abuja.
"Do not travel to the states of Adamawa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno, Cross Rivers, Delta, Federal Capital Territory (excluding Abuja), Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara," the travel advisory stated.
This warning follows recent statistics from Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which reported 2,235,954 abductions.
