LSWMO ENGAGES RESIDENTS OF LASG ESTATES
The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) recently held a sensitisation engagement with the Executives and Residents of the State Government Estates.
The Stakeholders forum, with the theme: “Environmental and Health Impacts of Untreated Wastewater and Faecal Sludge Discharge into the Environment by Built Estates in Lagos State”, had critical stakeholders in the environment sector in attendance.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resource, Tokunbo Wahab said that as Lagos State continues to evolve as a global economic hub, the State faces the dual challenge of rapid urbanization and inadequate wastewater management.
Mr. Wahab, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi Akodu, reiterated that despite the State Government's continued investments in sanitation, several unhealthy and illegal wastewater disposal practices persist, which endangers public health and environmental sustainability.
The Commissioner emphasised that the Stakeholders' engagement is critical because it is an opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of improper sanitation practices, particularly in Government Estates and foster community involvement in maintaining a clean and safe environment
He implored all residents and citizens of the State, especially the estates, to work together and embrace change, adding that a clean and well-managed sanitation system is not just a Government priority. It is a shared responsibility.
Earlier, the General Manager of Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO), Engr. Adefemi Afolabi
said he has seen first-hand the challenges faced by residents in managing wastewater across the State and was assured that the State has incredible potential for improvement when communities and stakeholders come together to support and work with the State Government to achieve the common purpose of a clean environment.
The Guest Speaker, Prof. Isaiah Akoteyon, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Lagos State University, gave a presentation on the topic: "Environmental and Health Impacts of Untreated Wastewater and Faecal Sludge Discharge into the Environment by Built Estates in Lagos State".
The forum concluded with actionable plans and commitments to work collaboratively with officials of the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on ensuring that wastewater management in the estates is given the deserved attention required while ensuring that compliance with environmental standards is achieved.
