The Saudi Arabian government has released three Nigerian women—Hadiza Abba, Fatima Malah, and Fatima Gamboi—previously arrested for alleged possession of illicit drugs.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed their release following 10 months in detention. The development came after extensive diplomatic efforts between the Nigerian government and Saudi authorities.
The women were apprehended on March 5, 2024, at Prince Mohammad bin Abdul Aziz International Airport in Madinah during a pilgrimage. They were suspected of being accomplices after two other Nigerians were found carrying capsules of cocaine.
After prolonged legal and diplomatic engagements, the women were acquitted and handed over to the Nigerian Consulate in Jeddah. They are now undergoing immigration processes before returning home to reunite with their families.
