Anambra 8th Assembly Passes 31 Bills, 72 Resolutions in Two Years — Speaker Udeze

By Chizoba Okeke

As the Anambra State 8th Assembly marks two years in office, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze has announced that the Assembly has successfully passed 31 bills into law, and described the legislative agenda as people-oriented aimed at enacting laws that create meaningful impact across the state.

Speaking to journalists in a press briefing, the Speaker said that the assembly also passed 72 resolutions through motions and committee reports, highlighting landmark legislations such as the Local Government Administration Law which, despite initial criticisms, has been adopted by some states and the Homeland Security Law, which has contributed to the state’s fight against crime.

He said that the Assembly also looked into the Electricity Bill and Anambra State Development and Investment Corporation Law, which would make it difficult for any future administration to derail the state's investment priorities.

Acknowledging some challenges within the Assembly, including the need for better office space for staff, Udeze noted that Governor Chukwuma Soludo has promised to address the issue, though the Legislative Complex had been renovated with the ongoing landscaping, saying that discussions are still ongoing to ensure full legislative autonomy for the Assembly.

Speaking on constituency engagement, the Speaker emphasized that lawmakers have maintained strong ties with their constituents through town hall meetings, skill acquisition programs, and health insurance initiatives and expressed confidence that, by the end of their tenure, the Assembly’s achievements in lawmaking, representation, and legislative reforms would make the state proud.

He also maintained that there is cordial and effective synergy between the Legislative and Executive arms of government in Anambra State which has enabled good governance to thrive.
