In a spirited display of camaraderie and competition, the Anambra State House of Assembly clinched a commanding 4–1 victory over the state’s executive arm in a friendly football match held Tuesday at the Awka Township Stadium.
The highly anticipated match was part of activities marking the Assembly’s second anniversary in office and served as a symbolic gesture of unity between the two branches of government.
From the opening whistle, the legislative team took firm control of the game, netting three goals before the executive squad managed to respond with a single strike before halftime. The first half ended 3–1 in favor of the lawmakers.
The second half saw continued dominance from the Assembly side, who sealed the match with a fourth goal, sending spectators into a frenzy and wrapping up the contest with an emphatic 4–1 scoreline.
Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, hailed the match as a powerful representation of unity and shared purpose. “This was never about rivalry, it’s about reinforcing the bond between the legislature and the executive. We may operate in different roles, but we serve one people, one state, and pursue one agenda,” he said
Udeze praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s leadership for fostering collaboration across government institutions, adding that the match was a reflection of their collective commitment to the development of Ndi Anambra.
Deputy Speaker and captain of the legislative team, Right Honourable Chukwuma Okoye, expressed joy at the outcome. “We’re not professional athletes, but today we played with heart and it paid off.
“The victory is sweet, but more importantly, this match shows that governance can be both collaborative and spirited.” he said.
Also present at the stadium were top government officials, civil servants and enthusiastic supporters from all corners of the state, many of whom described the event as a welcome reminder that leadership can be engaging, approachable and people-centered.
As the final whistle blew, players from both teams embraced and posed for photograph, a gesture that underscored the deeper purpose of the match building bridges, not rivalries.
The event concluded with a brief awards presentation, further emphasizing the day’s message of unity, teamwork, and shared responsibility in service to the people of Anambra State.
With sportsmanship as the day’s true winner, both the legislative and executive arms departed the pitch not just as teammates in governance, but as partners in progress.
