Police in Kaduna State have issued a summons to former governor Nasir El‑Rufai and seven other key members of the African Democratic Congress ADC , prompting claims of constitutional overreach and a brewing political showdown
The police want all eight to answer to charges of criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, mischief, and causing grievous hurt. They are to appear before the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) on Monday, September 8, 2025. The summons come amid heightened political tension in the state.
The letter, dated September 4, 2025, signed by DCP Uzainu Abdullahi, directs El‑Rufai and six named ADC leaders—including Bashir Sa’idu, Ja’afaru Sani, Ubaidullah Mohammed, Nasiru Maikano, Aminu Abita, and Ahmed Rufa’i Hussaini, to appear at SCID on September 8, 2025 to 'clarify the allegations reported against them' by complainants
On Thursday, police sealed the ADC Secretariat hours before the North‑West leadership's planned visit, supposedly to console victims of last Saturday’s violent disruption of an opposition coalition inauguration, attacks which were blamed on suspected thugs wielding cutlasses, clubs, and stones.
Meanwhile, Mallam El‑Rufai has fiercely denounced the summons as a violation of their constitutional rights.
In a press briefing, he criticized the police for waving an unserved court order, calling it 'a dangerous descent into lawlessness,' and vowed to challenge the summons in court.
As the countdown to September 8 begins, all eyes will be on SCID and the state’s corridors of power. Will El‑Rufai and the ADC comply, or will they mount a legal battle?
