Mahmood Yakubu, the outgoing chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has officially handed over leadership of the commission to May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as acting national chairman.
The announcement was made on Tuesday at the INEC headquarters in Abuja during a meeting with resident electoral commissioners (RECs). Agbamuche-Mbu, representing Delta state, is the most senior national commissioner, qualifying her for the acting role until President Bola Tinubu appoints a substantive chairman.
Yakubu, whose tenure as INEC chair began in 2015 and was renewed in 2020, expressed gratitude to the commission members for their support and urged them to extend the same professionalism to his successor. During his leadership, he oversaw the 2019 and 2023 general elections and several off-cycle polls, introducing key reforms such as the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS) and the INEC result viewing portal (iReV) to enhance transparency.
Agbamuche-Mbu, a lawyer, has served as a national commissioner since 2016 and was reappointed in 2021. She has been instrumental in election monitoring, legal compliance, and stakeholder engagement initiatives. Her appointment follows the standard administrative procedure, ensuring continuity while a new chairman is selected.
The commission is expected to continue preparations for upcoming off-cycle elections in Anambra State and ongoing reviews of electoral guidelines and logistics. Agbamuche-Mbu will steer these efforts in her acting capacity, marking the start of a new administrative phase for Nigeria’s electoral body.
The handover comes amid ongoing calls for electoral reforms and debates over strengthening INEC’s independence and operational efficiency. The ceremony was attended by national commissioners, directors, and senior staff.
