AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk.  Côte d'Ivoire's president reappoints Robert Beugre Mambe as prime minister

Côte d'Ivoire's President Alassane Ouattara has reappointed Robert Beugre Mambe as prime minister, following the resignation of the government in the wake of December’s legislative elections, a presidential decree said on Wednesday.

Ouattara tasked Mambe with forming a new government “as soon as possible,” according to the decree that was read in a broadcast, Anadolu Agency reported.

The president had accepted the resignations of Mambe and his government on January 7, paving the way for a new government following legislative elections that were held on December 27.

Ouattara’s ruling party, Rally of Houphouetists for Democracy and Peace, secured a majority in the National Assembly, winning 197 of the 255 seats, an equivalent of 77% parliamentary composition.

The legislative elections followed presidential polls on October 25, in which Ouattara won a fourth term with nearly 90% of the vote.
