 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week. TENSION HAS REPORTEDLY GRIPPED OBUKPA TOWN, IN NSUKKA AREA OF ENUGU STATE, FOLLOWING THE ALLEGED KILLING OF A YOUNG MAN BY SOME YOUTHS FROM AMAOZARA OBUKPA COMMUNITY.(PHOTO)


 Tension has reportedly gripped Obukpa town, in Nsukka area of Enugu state, following the alleged killing of a young man by some youths from Amaozara Obukpa community.


According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred at about 10:00pm on Saturday when the youths allegedly approached the victim, accusing him of being responsible for the theft of solar-powered street lights in the area. 


The young man, who was later discovered by residents as an innocent indigene of Obukpa, was reportedly beaten severely.


Sources claim that during the attack, the assailants allegedly used iron rods to assault the victim, inflicting fatal injuries.


 The young man was said to have died as a result of the injuries sustained.


Following the incident, fear and panic reportedly spread across Obukpa town, with many residents fleeing for safety. 


It was further alleged that youths from Amaozara Obukpa involved in the attack have since abandoned the town and gone into hiding in nearby bushes and mountainous areas.

Meanwhile investigation is currently underway.
