 AU urges de-escalation as fighting displaces over 180,000 in South Sudan’s Jonglei state The Chairperson of the African Union Commission called for immediate de-escalation and strict adherence to South Sudan’s 2018 peace agreement, as renewed fighting in Jonglei State displaced more than 180,000 people and raised fears of further civilian harm. In a statement, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, particularly Jonglei, where escalating violence and inflammatory rhetoric have put civilians—including women and children—at heightened risk. South Sudanese authorities estimate the number of displaced in Jonglei at more than 180,000, the United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA said last week.  Yoruba Nation Activist Sunday Igboho Returns to Nigeria After Years in Exile


Chief Sunday Adeyemo, widely known as Sunday Igboho, the prominent Yoruba Nation activist, has returned to Nigeria following his removal from the Federal Government's wanted list under President Bola Tinubu's administration.


Igboho arrived in Ibadan on Monday, January 26, 2026, marking his first major public appearance since fleeing the country in 2021 amid a security raid on his residence. Upon arrival, he headed directly to the palace of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, in what his camp described as a significant homecoming.


Confirming the development, Igboho's spokesperson, Olayomi Koiki, stated that the activist was en route to the Olubadan's palace. “As I’m speaking to you, Chief Sunday Adeyemo is on his way to Olubadan Palace. He should be there any moment from now,” Koiki said.


Koiki earlier characterized the return as a “historic” moment and one of hope for Ibadanland and Yorubaland at large. “This is a moment of hope for Ibadan land and the entire Yorubaland. Chief Adeyemo is no longer being sought by government authorities and is free to return home,” he added.


The activist's clearance to return reportedly followed interventions by prominent Southwest traditional rulers, including the Olubadan, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, and others, who appealed to President Tinubu on his behalf. Reports indicate that these royal interventions facilitated his removal from the watchlist and paved the way for his reintegration.


Igboho had been living in self-exile in the Benin Republic after escaping a 2021 Department of State Services (DSS) operation at his Ibadan home, which led to his declaration as wanted on charges related to treasonable felony and stockpiling of arms. He was later arrested in Cotonou in July 2021 while attempting to travel abroad but was released after legal proceedings.


His return comes amid a period of relative calm in separatist agitations in the Southwest, with supporters viewing it as a positive step toward reconciliation and national unity under the current administration.

 Tinubu announces arrival of 4 US attack helicopters President Bola Tinubu has stated that four attack helicopters will soon arrive in the country from the United States amid rising insecurity.
