AKPABIO URGES SOUTH EAST TO SHUN ARMED STRUGGLE, EMBRACE PEACE FOR DEVELOPMENT. (PHOTO).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appealed to the people of the South East to sustain peace and prevent their youth from engaging in armed struggle against the Federal Government. Akpabio made the plea on Saturday during the funeral of Sir Albert Ikechukwu Nnamani, former Administrative Secretary of the defunct Oil Mineral Producing Area Development Commission (OMPADEC), held in Ikem, Enugu State. In a statement made available to journalists in Abuja, Akpabio emphasised that development can only thrive in a peaceful atmosphere and urged Ndigbo to properly mentor the younger generation. “For Ndigbo, I want to plead with you to continue to maintain the peace and watch the youth of today. They don’t understand politics. They don’t understand development. You can only have development in an area of peace,” Akpabio said.  Four UNICROSS Students, Staff Killed in Road Accident


The University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of three students and one staff member.


The accident occurred when a vehicle conveying 24 students and one staff member was involved in a crash in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. The group was returning from an official assignment in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.


In a statement issued on Saturday by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Onen Ebri Onen, the university confirmed the deaths of four persons.


The deceased were identified as:


- Comrade Solomon Uya, Director of Sports, Students’ Union Government (SUG)

- Comrade Lucky Erim, Department of Chemistry, President of the Faculty of Physical Sciences Students’ Association and President of Presidents

- Comrade Favour Darlington, Department of Educational Management

- Mr Anthony Arikpo, a staff member and driver of the vehicle


The university stated that the surviving students and any other injured persons are currently receiving medical treatment at various hospitals. Management assured that adequate medical care is being provided for all the victims.


Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof. Francisca Bassey, accompanied by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Stella Maris-Okey, visited the injured students in the hospitals. Prof. Bassey remained with the victims into the early hours of the morning to ensure they received necessary medical attention.


In her condolence message, Prof. Bassey described the incident as a devastating loss to the entire university community and extended heartfelt sympathies to the families of the deceased.


She reassured the injured students and their families of the university’s unwavering support, stating that their full recovery and welfare remain a top priority.


The university appealed for calm among its community and urged parents and guardians to remain assured that every possible effort is being made to ensure the best care for those receiving treatment.
