By Obiageli Nwankwo

The Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra State Council, has commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo over the reappointment of some members of his administration, describing them as personalities who have remained supportive of journalism and media development in the state.

The Chairman of the Union, Comrade Odogwu Emeka Odogwu PhD, gave the commendation while addressing journalists during the Union’s Congress held at the Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre on May 7, as the council announced plans to celebrate its 35 years of existence later in the year.

Odogwu specifically praised the reappointment of Law Mefor, Afam Obidike and Agha Mba into Governor Soludo’s second tenure cabinet.

He also applauded the appointment of Okey Ezeobi as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, as well as the return of ICT expert Chukwuemeka Agbata as Managing Director of the Anambra ICT Agency.

According to the NUJ chairman, the appointees have, at different times, identified with the journalism profession and demonstrated understanding of the role of the media in societal development.

He noted that journalism remains critical to governance and public visibility, adding that Ezeobi had previously received the Union’s Man of the Year Award in recognition of his support for the media profession.

Odogwu further urged public office holders and other stakeholders to remain journalism-friendly, stressing that the media gives credibility and visibility to government policies and individual achievements.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ State Information Chapel, Dr Stanley Onunkwor, described the reappointment of Mefor as Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation as a step in the right direction.

Onunkwor said Mefor’s one year and eight months in office during the governor’s first tenure had significant impact on the state’s information sector, expressing confidence that the reappointed officials would improve on the achievements already recorded.
