 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali.    Senate President Abubakar Saraki took to his social media today to write ''Yesterday, I received a high-powered delegation from the European Union (EU) to discuss the rising illegal migration and mobility from Nigeria to Europe through dangerous routes.As many of you will recall, just two weeks ago, 26 young Nigerian girls lost their lives aboard a Spanish vessel when embarking on one of these illegal trips. This is why, last week, the Senate passed a resolution to investigate the unfortunate incident.At the meeting with the EU, I emphasized that Africa and Nigeria need to begin to see how best our two continents can work closely together to solve this challenge. This is because how we address the issue of migration will define the future of our two continents — and the Senate and the National Assembly are keen to see what we can do to support and facilitate solutions to this problem.These are issues that we all have a responsibility as elected members of parliament to put an end to. The number of criminal gangs that are now building up and seeing this as a commercial activity is quite alarming — therefore, we must put a spotlight on this to stop the illegal trafficking and migration of our people''.More photos below.
