The Makurdi Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, has thrown its weight behind the Benue State Government in rejecting the proposed Ruga settlements for herdsmen in the state.
Branch Chairman of NBA, Mr. Job Kalibus Ishember made the position of the association known in an interview with newsmen shortly after a courtesy call on Governor Samuel Ortom at the Benue Peoples House, Makurdi.
He said the bar associates itself completely with the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of the state and urged the Federal Government to support implementation of the law which he noted would provide a permanent solution to the herders and farmers crisis plaguing the country.
The NBA Chairman noted that it was unfortunate for Nigerians to wake up with the news of Ruga settlements and its nomenclature, saying it was heartwarming that a Federal High Court had validated the ranching law of the state when it ruled on the suit instituted by Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore.
He stated further that their visit to the Benue Peoples House was to among other things, encourage the Governor to continue to hold the Benue land entrusted in his care for the people by the Land Use Act.
Mr. Ishember said they had also intimated the Governor of their forthcoming 2019 Law Week with the theme: "Strengthening Democratic Institutions For Sustainable Development" during which they intend to honour him with an award.
Governor Ortom had during a meeting with the state officials of NBA, thanked them for the visit and assured them that his administration would not shift its position on the ranching policy in the state.
He restated the stand of the state that it would only be part of the National Livestock Transformation Plan if it agrees with the state's Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law.One more photo below.
