 Russian forces to stay in Mali to fight terrorism: Kremlin The Kremlin said on Thursday that Russian forces would stay in Mali to help the country's government battle terrorists following an offensive over the weekend by Tuareg-led separatists and terrorists. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov made the statement after being asked by a reporter how Russia responded to a purported statement from the terrorists saying they wanted Russia to leave Mali. "Russia's presence there is, in fact, due to the need identified by the current government. Russia will continue, including in Mali, to combat extremism, terrorism and other harmful phenomena and will continue to provide assistance to the current government," said Peskov, AFP reported. The Russian Defence Ministry had claimed on Tuesday that units of its African Corps prevented an attempted coup on April 25, 2026 in Mali. Ogun state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on Wednesday sent a congratulatory message to wife of the President, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, on her 50th birthday celebration.
The President’s wife, who clocks 50 today, he said, has been both supportive and reliable pillar of strength to President Muhamnadu Buhari and the entire family.
The statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Kunle Somorin, described the First Lady as a “strong woman of conviction and strong pillar of support” for the President.
Governor Abiodun praised the First Lady as "an intelligent person who keeps the home front comfortable for our President to govern with integrity and without distractions".
He prayed that the good Lord keeps Hajiya Aisha in good health to continue the good work she's doing as pillar of the First Family and in the country at large.
